Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) has always been one of the most creative and powerful characters in comics. WandaVision and Doctor Strange 2 reminded people of this and made her more popular in comic books. Marvel noticed and capitalized on her popularity. Her series (Scarlet Witch) by writer Steve Orlando and Jed MacKay’s Avengers has helped elevate her character further.

At the New York Comic-Con, Marvel Comics announced more coming for the Scarlet Witch to celebrate her 60th anniversary in 2024. If that’s not enough, it will feature her brother, Quicksilver.

According to Marvel.com, Wanda receives a letter from the deceased Magento (who’s coming back in 2024). Instead of saving the letter, she destroys it before her brother can see it. This leads to the two of them fighting. Of course, this happens at an inopportune time. A new and improved Wizard (Bentley Wittman) who’s described as having an “eldritch upgrade” will be their villain.

The Wizard is a weird choice for an antagonist. Despite his name, Bentley Wittman isn’t a magician. His powers are scientific. An eldritch upgrade could mean he’s changing the source of his abilities. It would make sense since Wanda’s enemies are usually magic-based. However, the Wizard is long overdue for improvement. Maybe now he’ll be more than a Fantastic Four villain that isn’t of Reed Richards’ level.

The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have been through a lot in their 60 years as Marvel characters. They started as mutant terrorists that became Avengers. They’ve also caused the decimation of the mutant gene (House of M). Their constant evolution and headlining moments proved that there will always be a place for them in Marvel Comics. Giving them a four-part mini-series celebrating and announcing it at the 2023 New York Comic-Con was the perfect combination. Hopefully, Steve Orlando will continue to make Scarlet Witch everything that he’s made her great.
