18 must-read X-Men comic books of the 2000s
By Mark Lynch
7. Messiah Complex/Second Coming
Writers: Various
These two stories are the deepest in the X-Men lore. During X-Men: Messiah Complex, the first mutant birth since House of M sent ripples throughout the world. This led to an epic battle between the X-Men, Mr. Sinister’s Maruaders, Predator X, and the Purifiers. Second Coming started with the return of Hope Summers and Cable (more on that next). It has the emotional rollercoaster of Messiah Complex with more action and death.
If you read anything on this list, it should be these comics. Not because they’re the best on the list, but because they will become your gateway into the X-Men. All of the characters, their skills, and personalities are on full display. Marvel couldn’t have asked for better writers to create these two tales.
6. Cable
Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Cable will show Nathan Dayspring Summers as you’ve never seen him before. Of course, he remains the time-traveling mutant with giant guns that everyone loved. The added bonus is seeing him as a father.
Cable took Hope Summers to the future at the end of X-Men: Messiah Complex. Everyone had a plan for Hope. Bringing her to the future made sure she could decide for herself who she wanted to be. During their travels, he teaches Hope how to survive. She even saves his life from Bishop, Stryfe, and other future antagonists.
This comic book run allows readers to see how she became one of the toughest mutants of all time.
