Ahsoka: Every character ranked from worst to best
3. Huyang
Huyang, the ever-quirky droid brought to life by the unmistakable David Tennant, is the kind of person (droid?) we all need in our lives.
It’s no small feat when a television series, even one as iconic as Star Wars, finds itself with a character so intriguing, so profoundly human in his quirks and mannerisms that he steals the spotlight. Huyang shines brighter than the stars themselves in this regard, proving that sometimes, in a universe filled with epic battles and grand destinies, it’s the unlikeliest of heroes who steal our hearts.
David Tennant’s reprisal of his role from Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 — 2014) brings a comforting familiarity that wraps around you like a hug. His voice, a delightful blend of charm and eccentricity, makes Huyang a character not only entertaining but also endearing. Now, let’s not overlook Huyang’s quirks. He may be close to being the galaxy’s most informative encyclopedia and he occasionally wears his weird, robotic emotions on his metallic sleeve, but he’s the first character in Star Wars history to utter those iconic words, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”
That was pretty awesome.
2. Lord Baylan Skoll
In Ahsoka, one star shines especially bright, and that star is the beloved and late Ray Stevenson’s portrayal of Baylan Skoll. His performance as the former Jedi Order general left a pretty big mark on the show, making Baylan one of the most fascinating characters to grace the show.
Stevenson’s final bow as Baylan, while tinged with the sadness of his unfortunate passing earlier this year, was an absolute joy to behold. His lightsaber duels with Ahsoka are beautiful, gracefully choreographed and carrying meaning with them, and in the differences of their unique styles. The way Baylan wields his saber is a visual treat for fans who enjoy the artistry of lightsaber combat.
Yet, it’s not just Baylan’s skills in battle that makes him stand out. Stevenson imbued the character with motivation that transcends the galaxy’s relentless cycle of war and death. Baylan’s desire to bring an end to this endless turmoil adds purpose to him, making him a character viewers can’t help but watch closely. His wise, mysterious, and somewhat emotional nature leaves us craving more, eager to unravel the mysteries that shroud him.
Unfortunately and like a few others on this list, Baylan is pretty underutilized as well. His character arc and relationship with Shin Hati remain painfully underdeveloped, leaving us wondering if we’ll ever get their backstory or be told of their actual bond. Also, with the untimely passing of Ray Stevenson, the question of Baylan’s future in Ahsoka‘s hypothetical season 2 comes up. Will he be recast? Will he be written off? We shall see.
