35. The Flash season 9

Putting the final season of The Flash down this low on the list was not something I wanted to do. Heck, it’s something I shouldn’t have had to do. But the sad truth is that season 9 missed every opportunity for greatness, sending this titan of a show out on a disappointing note.

Original characters were forsaken, new characters were introduced without rhyme, reason, or purpose, and the lackluster supporting characters that audiences just didn’t care about took up far too much screentime. Chester and Allegra’s underbaked and yet repetitive romance was as by-the-numbers as you can get, Cecile decided it was time to be a superhero (and somehow developed flying abilities while she was at it?), and the arrival of newbie Khione meant that we didn’t get to spend the final season with beloved Flash vet Caitlin Snow.

There were less episodes in season 9 and that should have allowed for a tight and concise finish to the show, but the creative team opted to recycle the tired old “graphic novel” format (as well as a multiple-episode interlude), dropping storylines after just four episodes, acting like it was just any other season in the process. It was all so messy and completely missed the mark.

There were glimmers of brilliance (the episodes in which Green Arrow returns and Barry travels back into the past were outstanding), and some of the other episodes were decent. But it rarely felt like the grand finale that a show like The Flash deserved, and that is unforgivable.

Objectively, Season 9 isn’t the worst season of The Flash, but it is easily the most disappointing.
