Max has kicked off November with the surprising arrival of a notorious Marvel movie, and it’s probably not what you’re expecting.

November is here, and with that comes a host of new titles on various streaming services. All of the big streamers add new movies and TV shows to their line-up each and every month, but the first day always features some of the most exciting additions.

WarnerMedia streaming service Max (formerly HBO Max) is no exception to that rule. However, it has added a movie based on certain Marvel characters, which might come as a surprise to audiences given that the platform is the home of DC Comics content.

But don’t get too excited, because the Marvel movie in question is none other than Fantastic Four. As in 2015’s Fantastic Four. As in one of the most notorious movies ever made.

Yep, that one.

Fantastic Four is now available to stream on Max

Fantastic Four has now made its presence felt on Max in the US. The film was released in 2015 and it features quite the star-studded cast, including Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, and Jamie Bell as The Thing. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to make it a critical or commercial hit as the movie flopped in all categories.

It has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 9%, indicating how much critics disliked the take on the Marvel characters. Among its many issues were its unusually grim tone, poor adaptation of Doctor Doom and all-around joylessness. Now, I can’t argue with any of that. Yes, I’ve seen it; it’s not as bad as its reputation provided you keep your expectations super low. But it will be interesting to see what a new generation of viewers watching the movie for the first time on Max make of it.

This was the second attempt to launch a Fantastic Four franchise by Fox, after the much more successful 2005 film of the same name, which starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis as the title heroes. That one even spawned a sequel in 2007.

The good news is that the characters are now in the rightful hands of Marvel Studios and their future looks brighter than ever.

Excitement is high for Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four movie

Whether you loved or hated 2015’s Fant4stic, there is no arguing with the fact that it never felt like a Marvel movie. Thankfully, that will no longer be an issue for the heroic foursome as Marvel Studios is bringing them back to the big screen as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019 meant that their movie rights reverted back to Marvel, so Kevin Fiege and co. can now use the characters in the MCU. And plans to do that have already been set in motion, as the new Fantastic Four movie is set for release on May 2, 2025. While the cast has yet to be announced, the film will be directed by WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman.

The hope is that this will finally be the Fantastic Four adaptation that we’ve all been longing for. After the 2015 outing, the sky really is the limit! And we can’t wait to see the F4 fly onto our screens as part of the MCU.
