7. Commander Michael Burnham (USS Discovery)

Appeared in: Star Trek: Discovery

Now, it’s true that she’s landed herself the seventh spot on our list, and, though Star Trek: Discovery‘s Commander Michael Burnham is truly one of my favorites, and here’s why.

First things first, we all remember her exciting and sometimes turbulent journey from being the dedicated first officer under Captain Georgiou (portrayed by the absolutely phenomenal Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh) to her various adventures (and misadventures) in the vast universe. But while her story has been nothing short of thrilling and inspiring, some fans have playfully pointed out that the fireworks of her individual exploits often overshadow her moments in the first officer’s chair.

Burnham is an absolute gem. Her resilience, determination, and growth as an individual are totally applause-worthy. Who doesn’t love a character that keeps you at the edge of your seat, guessing every decision she’ll make? However, if we’re diving into the nitty-gritty of her role as a first officer, there are other first officers in the Star Trek universe who’ve had a more significant impact in that particular position. While Burnham dazzles us in many ways, in the specific arena of first officers, she’s got some tough competition.
