4. Commander Chakotay (USS Voyager)

Appeared in: Star Trek: Voyager

Transitioning from a renegade Maquis leader to the steadfast first officer on the USS Voyager, Commander Chakotay takes the fourth spot on our ranking of Star Trek captains.

His loyalty and unwavering support for Captain Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager made their dynamic a fascinating one to watch. Their camaraderie in the unpredictable Delta Quadrant showed that two people from completely different worlds could come together and form a rock-solid team. Also, Chakotay deserves praise for keeping his cool while stranded some 70,000 light-years from home.

But, and there’s always a “but,” there’s room for a little… constructive feedback. Some Star Trek fans feel that Chakotay had more potential waiting in the wings that was never fulfilled by the show he appeared in – which is very true. With a rich backstory and cultural heritage, there were definitely more layers to peel back. While we got glimpses of his spiritual beliefs and his past, a deeper dive into his character could have catapulted him to an even higher rank on our list.

Nevertheless, Commander Chakotay was a thrilling addition to Star Trek: Voyager and we thoroughly enjoyed watching Robert Beltran bring him to life.
