1. The Undertaker vs. Batista – WrestleMania 23

The Undertaker and Batista wrestled a lot of barn-burners between 2007 and 2009 but of course their first clash is the best of them all. I don’t know whether it was the sheer surprise of the epic battle that unfolded, the storytelling that the match entailed, or just the overall spectacle of what we witnessed on the Grandest Stage Of Them All, but those two made some magic that night.

Over 80,000 jammed out Ford Field in Detroit as the legendary Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania Streak was put on the line alongside Batista’s World Heavyweight Championship, and they watched as the pair gave it their all to make history that night. Batista wanted to end the Streak, and The Phenom wanted his fifth World Title, and they were willing to do whatever it took to make it happen.

That was the story of the match; the story behind the match is equally as thrilling, as ‘Taker and Batista found out they would not be main-eventing ‘Mania (when they really should have been), so the duo went out there and made the company wish they had. They succeeded in that goal, delivering an unexpected banger that went on to become the Match of the Year. And it’s easy to see why.

Between Batista’s unexpected outpowering of The Deadman, to ‘Taker’s endless will to survive and extend The Streak to 15-0, the storytelling had us gripped from start-through-finish. And the chemistry between the two men was so darn brilliant that the 15-minute contest could have lasted twice as long and we wouldn’t have minded.

A World Title match for the ages, both men went out there and fought as though they had something to prove because they did (why they deserved to main event). To say they proved that would be a huge understatement. Without a doubt one of the finest matches of both men’s careers, and an excellent way to truly kick off one of the best WWE feuds of the 2000s.
