2. The Undertaker vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Match) – Backlash 2007

Ah yes, the first rematch. In the month that followed their banger of a WrestleMania match, SmackDown cleverly built towards the epic Undertaker and Batista rematch by adding the stipulation perfect for these two: Last Man Standing.

At the Showcase of Immortals, both superstars surprised us with the amazing back-and-forth psychology in their first ever meeting. Here, they just went out there into that arena and tore each other apart, much like many of us expected them to do the first time. But just like the first time, it was bloody brilliant.

To call it brutal would be underselling it. They tried to destroy one another in the hopes of walking away as champion, but they just couldn’t do it, with each one of them answering the ten-count no matter what their opponent threw at them. Batista Bombs, Last Rides, Chokeslams; nothing worked. Even an amazing Leg Drop through the table from the Champion wouldn’t keep Batista down. Likewise, The Animal’s physicality couldn’t defeat The Deadman.

It’s rare that draw finishes are seen as satisfying, but this was one of those occasions. The jaw-dropping stunt finish, which saw Batista spear ‘Taker off the stage and ultimately keep them both down, was the perfect way for Undertaker to retain, Batista to survive, and most importantly, the rivalry to continue.
