44. Yzma and Kronk

"“You know, in my defense, your poisons all look alike. You might think about relabeling some of them.” -Kronk"

Yzma was not the typical villain. First, she accomplished her goal. That’s rare with any antagonist. The plan was to defeat Kuzco and take over as the kingdom’s ruler. Unfortunately, she left the job in the hands of her “assistant”, Kronk. A gentle giant who wasn’t bad. He just wanted to please people.

This dynamic duo was perfect. They balanced evil and goofy and helped make this one of Disney’s funniest movies. They were good individually, but great together. The same can be said for the next duo coming up.

43. Kuzco and Pacha

"“You threw off my groove!” -Kuzco"

After the antagonists, we come to the heroes of The Emperor’s New Groove. At first, Kuzco is among the worst people ever. He was going to demolish an entire village so he could build a waterpark. Eventually, Kuzco changes his ways after his adventure with Pacha, a farmer with a huge heart.

Kuzco had more privilege than any other character and it showed. However, he didn’t have a reason to acknowledge it. That’s why meeting Pacha (and being turned into a llama) was important. He needed to hit rock bottom to become a better person. Along the way, Kuzko learned what it meant to be a friend, trust people, and recognize that he wasn’t always right.

Overall, these two pairs are the odd couples of Disney. They shared nothing in common, but that’s what made this story work. The creative team behind The Emperor’s New Groove should be praised for creating original heroes and villains.
