13. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

“We don’t talk about Star Trek V.” – Trekkies.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is widely regarded as one of the weakest entries in the Star Trek movie canon. Directed by William Shatner, who also played the iconic Captain James T. Kirk, the movie had tall ambitions when it came to the exploration of deep and thought-provoking themes. Its core philosophical question regarding the existence and nature of God is a daring and intriguing concept for a Star Trek movie. It also brings an interesting and surprising layer to the story that has the potential to go even deeper into each character’s beliefs and convictions.

However, despite its ambition, the execution left much more to be desired. The screenplay falls short at times, leading to a combination of scenes that switch between profound and perplexing, sometimes at the same time. It often feels as though the movie is struggling to find its own rhythm, resulting in an uneven narrative flow that undermines the story’s potential. The direction, while showcasing Shatner’s distinct artistic vision, doesn’t quite connect the philosophical elements with the action and adventure that audiences expect from a Star Trek movie.

This tension between concept and execution ultimately renders Star Trek V: The Final Frontier a movie that, while entertaining in many ways, falls short in delivering a satisfying experience.
