7. Star Trek: Generations (1994)

Star Trek: Generations was a cinematic landmark in its attempt to bridge the gap between the original series crew and the team from ’90s hit series Star Trek: The Next Generation. The idea itself was a giant on its own – a narrative crossover between the two generations, something like the passing of the torch from the old guard to the new. Well, the anticipation was very palpable as fans eagerly awaited the spectacle of Captain Jean-Luc Picard sharing the screen with Captain James T. Kirk, arguably two of the franchise’s most iconic figures.

But the execution of the movie didn’t quite live up to the task. In trying to serve two different Star Trek eras simultaneously, Generations seemed to spread itself too thin, with the narrative juggling act leading to an experience that felt more disjointed rather than cohesive.

The movie often seemed caught in a weird place, story-wise: not fully embracing the spirit of the original series, but also not entirely providing a satisfactory introduction for the Next Generation crew. As a result, despite having all the right ingredients for an amazing Star Trek adventure, Generations ended up feeling like less than the sum of its parts, delivering an experience that, while it had its incredible moments, lacked the kind of consistency seen in the franchise’s best entries.
