8. The Running Man

There’s something to be said for an ’80s action movie predicting a futuristic 2017 obsessed with reality TV. The mystique of The Running Man I guess.

Another ridiculously underrated chapter in Arnold’s repertoire, the 1988 flick was based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. Though the director has since disowned the movie for the creative liberties it took on the source material, it does stand on its own merit as an unusual look at the future, and a damn fine action movie too.

This time around, Schwarzenegger portrays a convicted cop framed for a crime he didn’t commit, who is then forced to take part in a reality TV show where he must fight to survive when surrounded by professional killers – who, yes, actually are allowed to kill him.

The dystopian element of a world obsessed with violence and death on television doesn’t necessarily go with the witty one-liners and action-driven plot, but The Running Man makes it work. It’s very like Total Recall in that sense, and given its unexpectedly correct predictions about the hold that reality TV has on people in the future (albeit without the killing), it’s aged remarkably well.
