Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was just recently released and it sent the internet into a meltdown. Seeing Kong as the rugged king of Middle Earth, Godzilla evolved into a taller creature with longer limbs and sharper spines, and the two of them uniting to take on a major threat; it’s all very exciting. However, one can’t help but fear that the movie could miss the mark with audiences.

The MonsterVerse hasn’t been the consistent success at the box office that Warner Bros. and Legendary wanted it to be. Yes, Godzilla did very well and Kong: Skull Island brought the franchise to a box-office high, but  Godzilla: King of the Monsters significantly underperformed – so much so that Godzilla vs. Kong was delayed for over a year. It then staged the ultimate comeback for the MonsterVerse by being a huge success during the pandemic, grossing almost half a million at the box office and becoming a huge streaming success on Max (formerly HBO Max).

The odds should be in The New Empire‘s favor, but let’s not forget that Godzilla vs. Kong was essentially meant to be the end of the first chapter of the MonsterVerse. Whenever King of the Monsters underperformed, expectations were lowered and many viewed the cinematic smackdown as just being the end. But its huge overperformance during a time when we all needed this kind of escapist entertainment has only gone and gotten it a sequel.

The question is: Is this a case of going to the well one too many times? Can Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire recreate the success of its predecessor? If the budget is once again in the realm of $200 million, then it could struggle to do that. We’re in an era now where established and successful franchises are capable of producing box office misfires, and the MonsterVerse has arguably already done that.

Here’s hoping Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire succeeds because it looks like a lot of fun!
