Ahsoka Tano dominated the Star Wars headlines this year but could she back for more? Could Ahsoka season 2 happen? Here’s what we know about its renewal status.
Ahsoka Tano has officially arrived for her own adventure. The adored Star Wars character was a pivotal part of animated series The Clone Wars before Rosario Dawson brought her into live-action in Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian. She then reprised the role in spinoff The Book of Boba Fett before she got the long overdue spotlight in her own standalone series.
Ahsoka premiered on Disney Plus in August 2023, making some history as the first of the streamer’s shows to premiere during Primetime hours. Now, eight episodes later and viewers just can’t get enough of the show.
Its season finale streamed on Tuesday, October 3, bringing about a close to the warrior’s debut outing, but now all attention turns to the future of Ahsoka and whether or not it will be back for a second season.
Ahsoka has not yet been renewed but it also hasn’t been cancelled
Disney Plus has yet to announce whether Ahsoka will return for a second season. The show is one of the multiple Star Wars miniseries to stream on the service and, at this moment in time, it is unclear whether the streamer plans on turning Ahsoka into an ongoing series with a season 2 renewal.
It’s worth noting that a second season of Ahsoka is reportedly on the table. According to a piece from The Hollywood Reporter, a potential season 2 would depend on the show’s performance. If that is indeed the case, a renewal could be in the near-future as the show has been rather successful for the streamer. In the week after its debut, Lucasfilm and Disney revealed that the premiere episode received 14 million views during its week of release.
Another clue about the show’s future could come from a post on the official Star Wars account on X (formerly known as Twitter). As reported by io9, the finale of Ahsoka was initially referred to as being the “series finale” before that post was deleted and subsequently republished on the Ahsoka account with the term “season finale” instead. Its counterpart on Instagram was edited from “series finale” to “season finale”. That’s not an official confirmation, but it does suggest that there is still the potential for a second season on the cards.
Furthermore, in recent months, multiple online scoopers have been tweeting that Ahsoka season 2 has been greenlit. It’s important to note that this is not official confirmation, but it is interesting that it began doing the rounds at the beginning of November – especially as one of them tweeted that it’s going to be filmed in Pinewood instead of LA. As always, take rumors with a pinch of salt until you hear confirmation from Disney, but it does sound like things are looking good for Ahsoka.
Here’s hoping Disney announces its fate soon.
What could a potential second season of Ahsoka be about?
There is definitely scope for a second season from a story perspective, too. The eight-episode first season left Ahsoka and her companions in something of a precarious position, suggesting that there is more story to be told. But if there is a second season, it will obviously see the resolution of that cliffhanger before presumably continuing Ahsoka’s ongoing story with Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Until her appearance in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano was one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars universe to never have a live-action adaptation. Rosario Dawson’s leading role in the series finally gave her the leading adventures that fans have wanted to see her in, and the show very much feels like her adventures are just getting started.
Regardless of whether or not the show does get a second season, there is a pretty strong chance that we will see Ahsoka Tano again as Dave Filoni is set to direct a Star Wars movie that would wrap up all of the arcs in the Mandoverse. Ahsoka is part of the Mandoverse now, so the ending of the show’s first season will have some kind of follow-up at some point, but fans are hoping that it will be in a second season.
Dave Filoni is working on a possible outline for season 2
While things have been quiet on the Ahsoka since the first season came to an end, Rosario Dawson did make some exciting comments in a recent interview that suggests the show could return. Speaking to Vanity Fair, she acknowledged that there has yet to be any official announcement on the show’s future, but that she felt the show was “probably going to get a second season” after finding out about Dave Filoni’s upcoming Mandoverse movie.
Speaking of Filoni, she also revealed that he was “working on an outline” for the second season, but added that nobody could really say anything about the show’s future at the time because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that were taking place. She said:
"“I mean, they’ve not said anything officially, but I remember when we were at Star Wars Celebration in London and they were like, ‘We’re giving Dave a movie!’ And I was like, ‘I kind of feel like that means we’re probably going to get a second season.’ For a while now, and especially now with the strike and everything, no one can say anything. But he did say he was working on an outline. So, we’ll see.”"
It certainly sounds like Dawson is optimistic that the show could return for a second season, and it’s understandable as to why. It was a hit for Disney Plus, and clearly worked well in the primetime timeslot, as Marvel Studios’ Loki season 2 became the next series to stream new episodes at that time too. So here’s hoping that will lead to another season for Ahsoka Tano.
With Filoni working on a possible outline for Ahsoka season 2, it definitely sounds like more adventures are in the warrior’s future. We’ll just cross our fingers that the official announcement comes soon.
Rosario Dawson would love to see Ahsoka season 2 happen
One person who would love to see Disney Plus renew Ahsoka for a second season is Ahsoka Tano herself, Rosario Dawson. In an interview with Empire, she spoke about her readiness to reprise the role again, saying that she’s “manifesting it”. She commented:
"“I’m absolutely putting it out into the universe… We’re joking about it, but I’m manifesting it because I feel like I helped Dave [Filoni, Star Wars mastermind and Ahsoka Tano’s co-creator] manifest this role. So I’m ready. I’m excited. I’m willing. I got my ice-packs ready to go for Season 2 and beyond! I would not be mad at that.”"
It goes without saying that she isn’t alone in manifesting Ahsoka season 2. The response to the series has been mostly positive, which isn’t surprising given how beloved the character is. I know I can say I instantly fell in love with Ahsoka when she made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian, so it would be great to see her traverse that galaxy so far, far away in even more adventures.
Another thing to bear in mind about Dawson’s comments are that they seem to imply that season 2 is still indeed on the table, suggesting that Ahsoka wasn’t envisioned as a one-and-done miniseries in the way that Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett were.
That’s all we know about the potential of Ahsoka season 2 right now. Stay tuned for updates as we eagerly await an announcement on the future of the Star Wars series.
