Absolute Wonder Woman and the comic book picks of the week
By Mark Lynch
This is an important week for Marvel, DC, and Image/Sybound Comics. Each has a No. 1 issue or a new story in a current run. This article will break them down with other comics you may want to grab. Let’s start with the pick of the week.
Absolute Wonder Woman No. 1 (pick of the week)
- Writer: Kelly Thompson
- Artist: Hayden Sherman
If you buy one comic book this week, it should be Absolute Woman. First, writer Kelly Thompson doesn’t miss. Her story about a Wonder Woman raised in Darkseid’s hellish world will be something you’ll never forget. Second, Hayden Sherman’s artwork perfectly fits this story. Lastly, if you enjoyed Absolute Batman, I guarantee you’ll love this.
Detective Comics No. 1090
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artists: Mikel Janin
Tom Taylor’s taking his talents from Bludhaven and Nightwing and bringing them to Gotham City and Batman. The ComiXology description says Detective Comics No. 1090 will connect to the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Considering Chip Zdarsky’s run mentions Bruce may have a brother, who knows what Tom Taylor is bringing to the table?
Void Rivals No. 13
- Writer: Robert Kirkman
- Artists: Lorenzo De Felici and Patricio Delpeche
Issue No. 12 of Void Rivals may have shown the awakening of the Galactus of the Energon Universe, Unicron. Plus, according to ComiXology, a member of Cobra-La is venturing to space, but what are they up to?
Iron Man No. 1
- Writer: Spencer Ackerman
- Artist: Julius Ohta
Tony Stark is getting new armor and a new, angrier attitude. Instead of fighting supervillains, Tony Stark is fighting the combined might of Roxxon and AIM as they try to take down Stark Unlimited. This is the first issue from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Spencer Ackerman. You won't want to miss this.
Green Arrow No. 17
- Writer: Joshua Williamson
- Artist: Chris Condon
This is the first issue since Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) helped save the world during Absolute Power. The problem is he lied to his family and put them in danger. It’s doubtful they’ll be as forgiving. Especially Black Canary. Her powers were switched and she’ll likely be furious.
Zatanna: Bring Down The House No. 5
- Writer: Mariko Tamaki
- Artist: Javier Rodriguez
Now that Zatanna knows she’s a magician, is it enough to save the world? What’s the secret her father kept from her? Since this is a DC Black Label comic book, there’s no telling what could happen. That includes the end of the world.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 3
- Writer: Jason Aaron
- Artist: Cliff Chiang
This issue is all about Leonardo. What has he been up to without his brothers? Is the Foot Clan on their way to him? Also, Michelangelo and Raphael were fighting at the end of the last issue. Will we see how that fight ends?
The Power Fantasy No. 3
- Writer: Kieron Gillen
- Artist: Caspar Wijngaard
Etienne Lux prevented millions of deaths by killing people in the government. Now he’s public enemy No. 1. What’s terrifying is he could take over the world if he wanted to. Unfortunately, there may be another Atomic that desires to.
Universal Monsters: Frankenstein No. 3
- Writer: Michael Walsh
- Artist: Michael Walsh
The cover of Universal Monsters: Frankenstein No. 3 shows a bride in front of Frankenstein’s Monster. Is this a hint of things to come? Writer/artist Michael Walsh has kept the heart of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein alive while changing a few things. You'll have to read the issue to see where he takes the story.
Superman No. 19
- Writer: Joshua Williamson
- Artist: Dan Mora
Doomsday is back. Lois Lane has superpowers. What more do you need? How about the return of another villain named Time Trapper?
