Comic book fans have spoken highly about Absolute Wonder Woman since the first issue. Writer Kelly Thompson didn’t just take Diana and make her a physically stronger version of herself or have her battle with what’s right or wrong.
She took everything that people love about the character and added Greek Mythology to the mix. The latter may not seem important until you remember how important heritage is to Diana. That part is highlighted in Absolute Wonder Woman 2026 Annual No. 1.
Back in Absolute Wonder Woman No. 5, Diana transformed into Medusa to defeat the Tetracide. Once she and the giant beast met eyes, the Tatracide was turned to stone. The transformation didn’t just give Wonder Woman the Greek myth’s abilities. She was able to see things from Medusa’s perspective. Among the things she noticed was that the curse of becoming a gorgon wasn’t the only part of the curse. It was not being able to look someone in the eye.
"The real horror of being Medusa–it’s that never again can you look another soul in the eyes and be seen."Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman temporarily gave up her superpowers (but not her magic) for the ability to look Medusa in the eyes. When she finally did, the Queen of the Gorgons cried as Diana said, “Sister, your punishment is so cruel you have forgotten what kindness is. But I see you.”
After learning that Diana didn’t mean her harm, Medusa asked the Amazon why she ventured to her home and risked her life. Wonder Woman tells her that by using her lasso, θυσία (which translates to Sacrifice), she can be rid of her curse. And, just like that, Medusa returned herself to her original form, but kept her ability to turn beings to stone. However, this time it will be an ability she can control.
Comic book annuals are stories usually used so they don't interrupt what's currently going on. But what happens in the tale sometimes connects to something coming up. In this case, Medusa saying that she’ll never forget helping her will come into play later when Diana truly needs assistance. What's even better is that this isn't the first time Wonder Woman saved a powerful someone who may come to help her later.
Throughout Absolute Wonder Woman, Diana has rescued and protected Greek mythological monsters and beings. For example, in issue No. 6, we see her offer the titan Prometheus water and relief from his chains and torture in exchange for his blood. During the story arc “As My Mothers Made Me,” she rescued the Minotaur, various other creatures, and Io (the first Amazon she’s ever met).
Eventually, Wonder Woman will need help, and the people she saved will bend over backwards for the wonderful woman who did the same for them. When that will happen remains to be seen. However, she's currently in a battle with Department K's Absolute Suicide Squad. Maybe Medusa and her sisters help Wonder Woman when it's time to take the fight to Veronia Cale.
