Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have been off the air for more than six years now, but fans continue to express their interest in seeing their favorite agents back onscreen. That said, fans will be happy to hear that Chloe Bennet, who starred as Daisy Johnson/Quake, is on board with a return to Marvel.
In a recent interview with ELLE, Bennet was asked, “If Marvel called tomorrow and asked you to bring Daisy Johnson back, would you say yes?” Her answer? “Totally.”
Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended in 2020, various rumors have circulated about Daisy showing up in Marvel projects. Rumors about her appearing in Secret Invasion were especially prominent leading up to and during the show’s release, but they were never anything more than that. With the theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday, fans are now (lightheartedly but also seriously) insisting that Daisy should be in the movie because she has the power to stop Doctor Doom.
Bennet has continuously denied any claims about her being in any Marvel projects since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended. Even so, her desire to bring Daisy back is good news.
Bennet is ‘obsessed’ with her Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. character
Aside from expressing her eagerness to reprise her role as Daisy in the MCU, Bennet also shared her affection for the character she brought to life.
“I’m obsessed with Daisy,” Bennet told ELLE. “I feel like I am Daisy. I would be so protective of her."
“I spent a lot of my life playing this character and this young woman growing into her power. There’s a lot of symbolism in that, especially looking back now. I would love to play her with the growth that I’ve had since I’ve had a break from the role.”
Daisy’s journey throughout the seven seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is widely regarded by fans as one of her best instances of character growth. She goes from being Skye, a hacktivist who doesn’t have the combat skills or weapons training, to being Quake—the Inhuman superhero who can quite literally move mountains, has the power to destroy worlds, and is one of the team’s best fighters. We watch her grow into her own person and learn what kind of agent and leader she can be.
When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended at season seven, Daisy was last seen in space on Zephyr 3. She is seemingly leading a mission alongside her man-out-of-time boyfriend Daniel Sousa and helping her time-displaced sister Kora find her place and discover herself. So, if Daisy were to return, it would be great to see her as this established agent with experience to trust and insight to rely on, played by a more experienced actress in Bennet.
Bennet talks Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s canon status
One of the best parts about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was how it handled the Hydra reveal that was unveiled in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That storyline was just one way the show, originally marketed as part of the MCU, integrated movie plot lines. As the series progressed, however, those movie connections dwindled. Now, Marvel doesn’t treat Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as an MCU project and doesn’t recognize it as part of the proper MCU—something that Bennet is upset about.
“I’m still low-key angry that they don’t fully acknowledge this as canon—the real followers will understand that,” Bennet told ELLE. “We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes.”
Even though the movie tie-ins ceased to continue, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had great value as a project that showed the MCU beyond the primary heroes and main storylines. It got into the lore of Hydra beyond The Winter Soldier and the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. It explored Inhumans and their connection to the Kree. It brought Robbie Reyes’s version of Ghost Rider to the small screen, and it even tackled time travel before the movies did.
The show would still acknowledge events from films but held its own by establishing narratives elsewhere. Not to mention, it also helped pave the way for the Marvel shows that came after, both ones from the old Marvel TV era like the Defenders-verse and the current Marvel TV era on Disney+. So it makes sense why Bennet and even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans want more respect for the show.
Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, has said positive things about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the past, so there’s perhaps hope that the show will be acknowledged as proper MCU canon at some point. After all, it happened with Daredevil and the Defenders-verse shows. So if that can happen and Phil Coulson can come back from the dead, then why can’t Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. be formally recognized as canon?
