When The Mandalorian season 1 was released on Disney Plus back in 2019, a new tradition was unknowingly created. See, since the very date that Grogu made his (very adorable) debut, Star Wars fans have enjoyed the release of a yearly TV show. Regardless of the quality or reception of these projects, it was always a given that we'd see more wars unfold across the stars year after year on the small screen.
Similarly, a different, but less exciting record was created with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. After audiences worldwide witnessed the conclusion of the latest (and very mixed) trilogy, there has been an absolute drought of films set in the iconic world that George Lucas first created. Surprisingly enough, 2026 is set to break both of these long-standing traditions for better and worse.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first Star Wars film released in nearly seven years. Needless to say, anticipation is at an all-time high, especially since the movie's first reactions are extremely positive. Unfortunately, this good news is also paired with a disappointing development that's necessary to bring balance to the Force. The tradition of having a yearly live-action Star Wars show release on Disney+ has finally come to its inevitable end with the delay of Ahsoka season 2.
Ahsoka season 2 has been officially delayed to early 2027
During Disney's 2026 Upfront presentation, Rosario Dawson announced that the second season of Ahsoka will arrive on Disney+ in early 2027, despite being originally announced for a 2026 release. Furthermore, this also means that three and a half years will go by (at the very least) before we can get a continuation of Ahsoka Tano's story. Fortunately, Dawson teased that the upcoming season will have plenty of spectacle to make up for this delay:
"It’s truly special seeing all the love from fans out there for Ahsoka and her crew. I can tell you this season, the battles are bigger, and the stakes are higher. We cannot wait for you to see."
Disney also released a sizzle reel promoting Ahsoka season 2. While the footage was exclusive to those in attendance at the Upfront presentation, multiple descriptions of what was shown have made their way online. The teaser had a lot of scenes featuring Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker, while other iconic characters like Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) were also part of the sizzle reel.

The open-ended finale of Ahsoka season 2 made it clear that Disney always intended for the show to have a follow-up. Audiences have spent years waiting to learn what will happen to Ahsoka and Sabine Wren after being stranded on the planet Peridea, and with Shin keen on hunting them down. As such, it's disappointing to learn that we'll have to wait even longer than originally intended to see the resolution of this story.
On the bright side, this delay could be a sign that Disney will take more time to polish the show's VFX. After all, the first season of Ahsoka had pretty impressive CGI sequences, with almost no exceptions. Furthermore, Ahsoka's showrunner, Dave Filoni, was promoted to co-president and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm as a whole. So it isn't far-fetched to assume that his new responsibilities also had a small role to play in the delay of Ahsoka season 2.
This is the first year since 2019 that we won't get a live-action Star Wars Disney Plus show, which is bound to be disappointing for fans of the franchise. Fortunately, we'll still have a Star Wars project this year courtesy of The Mandalorian and Grogu, so not everything is grim.
Ahsoka season 2 will be released in early 2027.
