Avengers: Doomsday makes Marvel history with its runtime

Avengers: Doomsday is a movie massive in scope, and its runtime doubles down on this idea.

Creating an Avengers movie can be a very tricky endeavor. Multiple characters fight for viewers' attention, and they all need to have the chance to shine, if only for a moment. With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Marvel even divided one overarching narrative into two different movies. This way, the heroes who had prominent roles in the first entry were able to take a step back in the next one, giving the spotlight to other fan favorites in return. Now, we're bound to watch a similar scenario play out with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has two films to close out its ongoing Multiverse Saga, and yet each one has to make the most of its runtime. For the first time in cinematic history, the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts are about to cross paths.

Furthermore, we're about to witness the introduction of Doctor Doom—a villain who didn't have the luxury of being set up throughout other movies. New variants of the mutants are about to jump into action, and heroes we haven't seen in years will finally make a comeback. There's a lot of ground to cover, so it doesn't come as a surprise that Avengers: Doomsday will have a lengthy runtime.

Avengers: Doomsday will be the second-longest MCU movie, at 2 hours and 45 minutes

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, domestic tickets for Avengers: Doomsday will go on sale on July 20, meaning fans will be able to secure their seats in Infinity Vision theaters five months in advance. Thanks to this presale strategy, the runtime of the next MCU film has been revealed at 2 hours and 45 minutes. Granted, it's important to remember that the final cut isn't locked yet, so there could be a slight runtime variation once the movie finally hits theaters. However, it shouldn't be anything too significant.

Avengers: Doomsday is on track to become the second-longest MCU movie ever made, so there's bound to be plenty of superhero action coming our way. For comparison, here are the ten longest movies in the franchise and their respective runtimes:

  • Avengers: Endgame - 3 hours and 1 minute
  • Avengers: Doomsday - 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - 2 hours and 41 minutes
  • Eternals - 2 hours and 36 minutes
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - 2 hours and 30 minutes
  • Avengers: Infinity War - 2 hours and 29 minutes
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home - 2 hours and 28 minutes
  • Captain America: Civil War - 2 hours and 27 minutes
  • The Avengers - 2 hours and 23 minutes
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron - 2 hours and 21 minutes

It has been rumored that Avengers: Doomsday will mark the last time we see some iconic heroes on the big screen. Most notably, variants of the X-Men from the Fox era are likely to make their last stand as Doom attempts to reign supreme over the multiverse. After all, it has been rumored that a new generation of mutants will be introduced in Avengers: Secret Wars, in anticipation of a new X-Men film set to be released in 2028.

Other fan favorites, such as Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, are also reported to be part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast. And that's without taking into account the 27 characters already confirmed to be part of the movie. We're about to witness the biggest superhero movie ever crafted to date, which explains why Marvel needs 2 hours and 45 minutes to tell this single story.

The runtime of Avengers: Doomsday is a likely indicator that its follow-up, Secret Wars, will become one of the longest superhero movies ever made. After all, the fifth installment in the franchise of Earth's Mightiest Heroes will close out the multiverse saga as a whole and set the MCU up for bigger things to come.

On the bright side, it shouldn't be long before we get a better glimpse of the next big MCU crossover. Marvel has confirmed it will host its iconic Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Fans have already spotted Avengers: Doomsday banners near the convention center, which means the film is bound to have some sort of presence. With a bit of luck, Marvel will finally release the first official trailer for the whole world to see, and we'll get an idea of what to expect when the second-longest MCU project finally comes our way.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
