People all over the world are talking about the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. The funny thing is most of the conversations surround the X-Men. And, if we’re being honest, this isn’t shocking.
Fans of Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been waiting for the arrival of Earth’s Mightiest Mutants for close to two decades. There have been teases in Ms. Marvel, The Marvels, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and more, but they’re finally here. But with their arrival comes questions about the trailer and comments that are less than favorable about one character in particular. Let’s start with some thoughts about Avengers: Doomsday before I critique some of the ridiculous comments.
Who are the X-Men fighting for?
In the trailer, the X-Men are fighting the Avengers. Shang-Chi makes his MCU return fighting Gambit, while Mystique battles Yelena Belova (both will be the most talked-about action scenes in the movie because of the choreography). There were also reports that Nightcrawler goes up against Reed Richards. We don’t know why they’re fighting, but I have some theories.
First, since Doom is doing what he can to prevent the incursion, one of the things he may have done was recruit the X-Men. They’re a threat that the Avengers haven’t faced, and that gives the mutants an advantage. Second, they may side with Doom because he promised the mutants a life without prejudice in his new world (something they've always wanted and fought for). Lastly, some of them may be loyal for getting them out of the Void.
During the trailer, Thor tells his team to put aside their petty squabbles. It seems like he could have just been talking to the original Avengers and the New Avengers, but it could be his speech to the X-Men and both Avengers rosters simultaneously. He knows that it may be the only way to defeat Doom. Sadly, that won’t happen in Avengers: Doomsday.
Cyclops
I once thought Steve Rogers sided with Doctor Doom. However, it’s doubtful that Scott Summers (Cyclops) would ever work with Doom. He would take one look at Doom, listen to everything he said, and know that everything he was saying was half-truths. This could be why he’s the only one fighting Sentinels. Which, if this writer had to guess, were created by Doom. That’s if they’re actually Sentinels and not giant Doombots.
The marvelous return of Rebecca Romijn
I couldn’t go without addressing the ridiculous and sometimes disgusting comments surrounding Rebecca Romijn’s return as Mystique. There have been posts about her attractiveness, not being naked, and more. Which are all absurd.
First, Romijn is in Raven’s classic(ish) look, complete with the skull on her forehead. It’s a terrific nod to Mystique in Marvel Comics and the X-Men cartoons. So, for those people who want comic book accuracy, here you go.
Second, here’s a fun fact for you: all shapeshifters are naked. As Morph once said in Exiles, “These may look like clothes, but when I shapeshift, do you really think that’s cotton doing the quick-change?” So, if you’re concerned that she isn’t naked, here’s some good news: she still is.
Lastly, and I hate that I have to address this, Rebecca Romijn looks amazing. To the people who don’t think otherwise, your opinions on her beauty have nothing to do with her performance. In fact, they add more negativity to the world and the conversations surrounding a project people are pumped for. So, in conclusion, let people enjoy things and try to be more positive.
