The recent CinemaCon presentation delivered a brand-new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday and offered a closer look at the main villain. Avengers: Doomsday promises a massive roster of heroes, but it is the villain of the story that fans are most excited to see. Not only will this be the true debut of the MCU’s take on Doctor Doom, but it also has the added thrill of seeing Robert Downey Jr. take on the role.
Doom has been hidden from the previous trailers thus far, but those in attendance at CinemaCon did get a glimpse at just how powerful this character is going to be. While Doom is certainly one of the most exciting aspects of the new movie, the description of the footage does suggest that the movie might be focusing on the wrong aspect of this imposing threat.

Doctor Doom will be another powerful threat to the heroes
One of the most talked-about moments in the trailer has been the showdown between Thor and Doctor Doom. The breakdowns of the footage describe Thor charging at Doom with Stormbreaker in hand and with all his power summoned, only to stop Stormbreaker easily with one hand. It certainly sets Doom up to be another powerful enemy for the Avengers to take on.
The sequence is reminiscent of the early scene in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos took on Hulk and beat one of the strongest Avengers with ease. It was a simple and effective way of showing the audience just how formidable this new enemy was and how the heroes are going to have their work cut out for them when facing him.
Repeating this beat is not as interesting to see again, and it is also not necessary for Doom. There have certainly been many iterations of Doom in the comics that depict him as an overpowered force, but that was never what made him a true threat. Doom is one of the smartest villains of all time. His calculating mind is how he is going to bring the heroes to their knees, not brute force.
Avengers: Doomsday is bringing in a massive roster of heroes, including the newly established Fantastic Four and the Fox X-Men characters. If Doom can just best any of them in a fight, that doesn’t make for a very interesting confrontation. What would be more interesting would be to see Doom as the outnumbered underdog who can still outthink his foes.
We’ve seen the Marvel heroes punch and blast enemies in big battles, but to have the smartest minds in the MCU matching wits with a truly brilliant threat is something new and fresh at a time when audiences don’t want the MCU to just be doing the same old thing. While Doom needs to stand tall against the Avengers and other heroes, hopefully, it is not at the expense of making him an intellectual threat.
