Although Avengers: Doomsday is set to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe's massive fall release this year, it will not be the only Avengers movie in theaters over the course of the next few months. No, before Doctor Doom targets Earth's Mightiest Heroes, audiences will get another chance to see Thanos' attempt to do so, as Avengers Endgame: Encore arrives in movie theaters on September 25, allowing MCU fans to revisit the biggest moment in the franchise's long, long history.
The re-release of the 2019 film will feature around two minutes of new footage related to Avengers: Endgame (that may not or may not directly influence the events of Avengers: Doomsday), but the IMAX and Infinity Vision versions will also feature 3 minutes worth of an Avengers: Doomsday sneak peek. And, as the Endgame bonus footage will likely be integrated into the original film, it's safe to say that any potential Doomsday sneak peeks will function as post-credits scenes.
That's pretty perfect considering that the original 2019 Avengers: Endgame release opted against using any post-credits scenes as it was the official conclusion of the Infinity Saga (Spider-Man: Far From Home would then act as an epilogue). And, as the MCU's recent reworking of the Multiverse Saga is all about tying it directly back into the glory days of the franchise's Infinity Saga, there is no better way to do that than to release the Doomsday footage as a post-credits scene - effectively making Avengers 5 a direct sequel to Avengers 4.
Avengers Endgame: Encore post-credits scenes expected to feature this pivotal Doomsday scene
A large part of Marvel Studios' decision to re-release Avengers: Endgame in theaters is tied to the philosophy of ensuring that the fans who might have moved on from the MCU after the Infinity Saga are aware of the fact that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is now being presented as a direct sequel to the 2019 movie. It's certainly a reinvention of the original plans for the film to just act as a the first chapter in the two-act conclusion of the Multiverse Saga but it works nonetheless - and it's probably better for the buzz surrounding the movie in the long-run.
In order to pull that off, it needs to have bonus scenes that directly push this narrative. It also needs to do what the Infinity Saga's big releases used to do - feature new scenes from some of its upcoming movies. And with that, Avengers Endgame: Encore is indeed expected to feature around three minutes of an Avengers: Doomsday sneak peek. To fans who have been keeping up with a multitude of Marvel and MCU rumors, that's not surprising.
While multiple suggestions have been made for what that new Avengers: Doomsday footage could be, multiple insiders have suggested that it will feature Tom Hiddleston's Loki. The Multiverse Saga's version of Loki was birthed in Avengers: Endgame itself when he absconded into the timeline with the Tesseract after Earth's Mightiest Heroes' plan to go back in time to 2012 and steal it went awry. So it would be pretty apt if the film's new post-credits scene caught us up on what he had been up to.
Of course, we know what he has been up to. Over on Disney Plus' Loki, the God of Mischief became the God of Stories when he assumed the throne at The End Of Time to protect the timelines within the multiverse from destruction - destruction that Doctor Doom's upcoming reign of terror may well bring with it.
As for Loki's role in the potential post-credits scene, that is expected to see him reunite with an old frenemy. According to reports, he will pay a visit to Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. Steve went back in time at the end of Avengers: Endgame to reunite with Peggy so that they could finally get their happy ever after after all those years, which served as a very satisfying ending to the Infinity Saga. However, it turns out that this might have caused a multiversal incursion that killed Doctor Doom's wife and son, which ultimately kickstarts his plan to reshape the multiverse in his own image.
We know that both Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are set to reprise their roles as Steve and Peggy in the upcoming film, so kicking off the first look footage with the two of them - who served as the happy ending of Avengers: Endgame - would make for a very effective post-credits scene. And as we know that Steve will be reuniting with the Avengers, Loki's arrival may well be the reason for that.
That brings us to the other rumored scened. Whether this one appears instead of the other one or along with it remains to be seen, but it's one that fans have been calling for for a long time - simply because it would be a work of storytelling magic. See, the original Avengers: Endgame release in 2019 didn't feature a post-credits scene, but it did feature a subtle tribute to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, as the Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the universe from Thanos. That tribute was simply the clanging sound of Tony using a hammer to construct his legendary armor in the first Iron Man movie. However, this theory suggests otherwise.
Rumor has it that we could actually see this scene instead of just hearing it. Except this time it will reveal that it wasn't Tony Stark - it's Doctor Doom (also played by Robert Downey Jr.) constructing his metal mask and armor. And, yes, in borrowing a great gameplan from the one and only Agatha Harkness, it could turn out to be Doom All Along.
We'll have to wait and see which of these potential post-credits scenes play a role in Avengers Endgame: Encore or if Marvel Studios has some new surprises in store for fans instead. Either way, you can rest assured that Marvel fans all over the world will be doing their utmost to catch a screening of the IMAX or Infinity Vision version of the film to catch a sneak peek at Avengers:: Doomsday.
