Marvel's next Avengers movie gets a disappointing release update

Ahead of its release, Avengers: Endgame Encore has unveiled its runtime and it's safe to say that it's a little unexpected.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is undefeated when it comes to box office dominance. That's even after a number of missteps in recent years, because despite the stumbles that the franchise has faced since the launch of its Multiverse Saga, nobody else comes close to achieving the $34 billion takings that Marvel Studios' unstoppable saga has produced.

After the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer, Earth's Mightiest Heroes will take on Doctor Doom in the heavily-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. However, there is another Avengers movie arriving in theaters before all of that - one that is pretty familiar with breaking box office records.

The most recent update regarding that release, however, has fans feeling a little bit defalted.

Avengers: Endgame Encore's unexpectedly short runtime revealed ahead of release

Avengers: Endgame Encore will bring Earth's Mightiest Heroes back to the big screen in an opportunity to revisit the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most ambitious adventure to date. Yes, the upcoming re-release of Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame arrives in movie theaters on September 25, and it is going to set the stage for Avengers: Doomsday in a way that only another Marvel movie could.

That being said, with the film's release upon us, it has been confirmed in a cinema listing by AMC Theaters that Avengers: Endgame Encore will have a runtime of 185 minutes - meaning that it will only be four minutes longer than the 2019 iteration. Now, for a typical re-release that's unexpectedly longer, but for this particular one - a re-release that will reportedly feature new footage that directly sets up Avengers: Doomsday - four minutes seems oddly short.

As it currently stands, Avengers: Endgame Encore is expected to feature a new custom introduction featuring the Russo Brothers, brief new scenes and / or footage throughout, and - for fans watching in IMAX or Infinity Vision - a brand new post-credits scene that will set up the events of Avengers: Doomsday. What that latter new addition actually means remains to be seen, but it has made the MCU's most must-see movie all that more must-see.

There has naturally been a lot of speculation about whether the post-credits scene might involve Loki arriving at the house of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, informing them that their happy ever after - which actually came about because of Avengers: Endgame - has potentially influenced the arrival of Doctor Doom, who seemingly wants to capitalize on the various incursions taking place throughout the multiverse.

There is a scene in both Avengers: Doomsday trailers that features Loki standing in what appears to be the doorway of a house. It's quite possible that this is Steve and Peggy's house, and this is the scene that will be used as the post-credits tag for Avengers: Endgame Encore. Again, this is all speculation, but given how Steve and Peggy's happy ending is the original ending for Avengers: Endgame, that could realistically lead to Loki's arrival at their front door.

There are hopes that Avengers: Endgame Encore will help the movie reclaim its positioning as the highest-grossing movie of all time. When the MCU's Infinity Saga- exclamation point was released in 2019, it managed to supplant Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time, earning $2.7 billion. But the 2009 James Cameron classic reclaimed the position due to a well-timed 2021 re-release in China, which pushed its total past $2.8 billion.

Now, Marvel fans are hoping that Avengers: Endgame's re-release can help it do the same. It will be a tall task considering that it needs to make $127 million to pull it off, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility. With the buzz of Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, it just might be doable.

Avengers: Endgame Encore arrives in movie theaters on September 25, 2026. Avengers: Doomsday then arrives on December 18, 2026.
