Bam Smack Pow comic book tournament: Superhero tier 1, Round 2
By Mark Lynch
The Bam Smack Pow Comic Book Fighting Tournament began with upsets. First, Superman was knocked out of the first round. Granted, he was fighting someone with a mastery of his greatest weakness (Dr. Stephen Strange), but it’s still shocking. He’s the Man of Steel. Second, there was also Magneto beating the Hulk. We know what Magneto is capable of. But, as Hulk likes to say, he's the strongest there is. That leaves the two physically strongest characters out of the tournament.
All but one of the round 1 matchups are done, so let’s get to round 2 of the "Tier One Superpowered Heroes" battles. But first, here are the results of the winners of the previous "Strength and Power!" category.
- Rouge over Blue Beetle (56% to 44%)
- Aquaman over Doctor Voodoo (67% to 33%)
- Hercules over DC Comics’ Ares (70%-30%)
- Carnage over Ben Grimm (56% to 44%)
- Venom over Poison Ivy (56% to 44%)
- Ghost Rider over Luke Cage (89% to 11%)
- Juggernaut over Colossus (64% to 36%)
- Miles Morales over Dracula (53% to 47%)
With that, let's get onto kicking off Round 2!
Wonder Woman vs. Doctor Strange
Wonder Woman has superior strength, decades of fighting experience, and an understanding of magic. Stephen Strange has an untold amount of magic experience due to time being different in the worlds he travels. And as much as Diana understands magic, Doctor Strange is usually the Sorcerer Supreme.
This comes down to who's willing to go the extra mile. Both heroes have done things that their peers deem immoral despite it saving the world. But who would stand tall if they faced off against each other?
Jean Grey vs. Storm
Jean Grey is one of the strongest telepaths in the universe. And, while using the Phoenix Force, she plugged a black hole in space (Phoenix No. 1 by Stephanie Phillips). Storm’s powers continue to be incalculable. For example, during Immortal Thor No. 4, Storm dropped Jupiter’s gravity on Thor while they fought on the moon.
Most people will immediately take Jean Grey for the win. However, Storm has won fights while being the underdog. This could be the closest battle in this round.
Thor vs. Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers)
Thor is the Asgardian All-Father and the best of the gods in the universe. He’s killed Galactus and prevented the destruction of deities throughout time (Thor: God of Thunder: God Bomb). At times, Captain Marvel has looked like the strongest being in the universe. Since she can absorb energy, too, so Thor’s Lightning may not affect her.
This fight is a toss-up. Both are heroes on an intergalactic level. This will come down to popularity.
Magneto vs. Scarlet Witch
Steve Orlando promised to make Scarlet Witch more powerful than ever and he made good on that promise. The things she’s done over the last few years in Marvel Comics have been amazing. On the other hand, we have Magento. He’s a character who’s done things with his mutant abilities that shouldn’t be possible.
In short, this is a battle of the impossible.
