In the previous comic book news in brief article, Blank Manta makes his return in Emperor Aquaman, Splinter becomes a giant, overprotective demon in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and so much more. This week, there’s a good amount to discuss in the world of Marvel and DC Comics. Let’s begin with a character acting unlike themselves.
What’s up with Kate Kane?
- Batwoman No. 2
- Writer: Greg Rucka
- Artist: Dani
- Colors: Matt Hollingsworth
Kate Kane is someone who doesn’t always follow the same path as the rest of the Bat Family. In a lot of ways, she’s more like Jason Todd (Red Hood) than Bruce Wayne (Batman). However, I never would have expected her to shoot and kill people, especially when they’re already beaten. Even her father was shocked when he saw what she’d done.
The Amazing Carnage?
- Title: Venom No. 257
- Writer: Charles Soule
- Artist: Javier Pina
- Colors: Matt Hollingsworth
Torment has been the best new Spider-Man villain in a long time because he’s unlike anything we’ve seen in a while. Plus, he’s competent, thorough, and moves with a purpose. So almost killing Spider-Man wasn’t shocking. What was shocking was Peter and Carnage bonding to save Spidey’s life.
A sentient matrix?
- Title: The Fury of Firestorm No. 1
- Writer: Jeff Lemire
- Artist: Rafael de Latorre
- Colors: Marcelo Maiolo
What happens when one of the most powerful superheroes in DC Comics loses morality? They turn a town into glass and chalk and later do horrific things to the people living there. That’s what’s going on with Firestorm in this series.
What’s more terrifying is that this isn’t Ronnie Raymond or Professor Martin Stein. It looks like the Firestorm Matrix is sentient and doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong. The question now is who's strong enough to stop someone who can transmute matter on an atomic level?
Archangel’s new powers
- Title: Inglorious X-Force No. 4
- Writer: Tim Seeley
- Artist: Philip Tan
- Colors: Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Back in Chuck Austen’s run of Uncanny X-Men, Warren Worthington III’s blood could heal people. In this newest issue of Infernal X-Force, it looks like some of his healing powers have returned, but stronger. Sadly, it looks like his new abilities were given to him by Mr. Sinister.
Separated Cyborg
- Title: New Titans No. 34
- Writer: Tate Brombal
- Artist: Sami Basri
- Colors: Adriano Lucas
Most of the people who fought in the Heart of Darkseid Tournament returned with something that’s being called Alpha Energy. The effects varied, but two people had their beings separated. In New Titans No. 34, readers learn that Victor Stone has been separated from his Cyborg half. Sadly, that side of him is determined to keep his friends safe by capturing them.
The end and a new beginning
- Title: Ultimate Wolverine No. 16
- Writer: Chris Condon
- Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio
- Colors: Bryan Valenza
After weeks of chasing Illyana Rasputin (Magik), Logan and Jean Grey finally caught up with her. After Logan kills her, he tells Jean that the Maker is behind all of this and that it’s time to go after him. If I had to guess, Wolverine and Jean will appear in the next issue of Ultimate Endgame No. 4.
Deathstroke’s broke and alone
- Title: Deathstroke: The Terminator No. 2
- Writer: Tony Fleecs
- Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
- Colors: Ivan Plascencia
One of Slade Wilson’s only friends and the person who handled his career was killed, and he was framed for the murder (Deathstroke: The Terminator No. 1). Now, the entire assassin community is looking to get the reward for his bounty. Deathstroke is penniless and alone, and now Deadshot has him in his sights.
Frank Castle's agenda
- Title: Imperial Guardians No. 2
- Writer: Dan Abnett
- Penciler: Marcelo Ferreira
- Inker: Jay Leisten
- Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg
This team is full of people who want to do the right thing…and Frank “Cosmic Ghost Rider” Castle, who doesn't care who he kills. At the end of the issue, Gamora asks him why he’s aligned himself with someone like Maximus. Castle ominously responds, “You’ll see.” If I had to guess, Maximus promised him a way to die and stay dead.
