Beloved Marvel character won't return in upcoming project after all

Marvel fans were holding out hope that one MCU character could return in an upcoming Disney Plus series, but it sounds like that might not be the case after all.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently taking us towards the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. It's not going to do that this year or the next year, but the studio is in the process of planning out the final chapters of the story that it is telling within the MCU. Due to that, and the fact that the franchise is staging a bit of a comeback after a lacklustre 2023, fans are particularly excited about the recent titles that have been released and the ones that are on the horizon.

It's safe to say that films such as Deadpool and Wolverine and shows such as Agatha All Along have reinvigorated interest in the MCU as it heads towards those all-important final chapters of the Multiverse Saga, including Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. And you know that Marvel is pulling out all the stops to ensure that those movies deliver, bringing back a ton of MCU legends to make it happen.

There is another project that is expected to bring back a beloved character in the Multiverse Saga, too, but that unfortunately won't be happening in that particular project, it seems.

Tommy Maximoff's storyline won't be in Vision Quest, according to reports

According to industry insider Alex Perez (via a Q&A with fans published on The Cosmic Circus), it's unlikely that Tommy Maximoff, a.k.a. Speed, will appear in upcoming Marvel Studios series Vision Quest. The scooper replied to a question about whether fans could expect to see the son of Vision and the Scarlet Witch, saying: "Not that I’m hearing. Tommy is being saved up for Billy and Agatha to find, from what I’ve been told."

This makes sense from a storyline perspective, and we will get to that in a moment, but it does go against some earlier reports that suggested the character might have a role in the series. We last saw Tommy in WandaVision and it was suggested that he would return in spinoff Vision Quest, as it is the third chapter in Disney Plus' "WandaVision Trilogy", coming after the original series and first spinoff Agatha All Along. A recent casting call for a young male actor also fed into the rumors that Tommy would be involved.

Prior to Agatha, Vision Quest made sense as the place to bring Tommy back to the MCU; the future Young Avenger is the son of Vision, and as Agatha featured his twin brother Billy, it would have been pretty fitting if this series featured Tommy. However, the events of Agatha created something of a change in the outlook of fans.

Billy and Tommy may have been creations from the mind of Wanda Maximoff, but when the Hex came down, Billy managed to jump inside of William Kaplan's body after he died in a car accident outside of Westview. He's a witch, with powers like his mother, so that makes sense. As Tommy can't do that (given that he's a speedster), Billy was able to place his consciousness inside the body of someone else who had recently died - with the help of Agatha Harkness.

When Agatha All Along concluded its season, Billy and Agatha set out to find Tommy, potentially setting up a future series (or season). There have been reports of a second season, but there have also been reports of a separate Wiccan series, so it's been unclear which one - if not both - could go forward. Now that Agatha and Billy's journeys are one and the same, their story needs to continue together - and it's pretty clear that this story involves finding Tommy.

Alex Perez also commented on that, adding that the purpose of the Agatha/Billy series is to have them find Tommy:

"The rumored Wiccan project and this Agatha All Along season 2 thing are one and the same. The idea is to develop a sequel project where Ghost Agatha and Billy go on an adventure to find Tommy."

With that in mind, it's clear that the Vision series will likely focus on Paul Bettany's White Vision attempting to figure out who he is now that his memories have been restored, and what his purpose in the world is. That could very well involve setting out to find Wanda, or even his children if he figures out that they are alive, but it sounds like the series won't feature Tommy Maximoff in any kind of significant way.

That being said, if there is another spinoff coming after this one, you can bet that it will probably set up that story in some way, shape, or form.
