The Avengers movies are constantly surrounded by a lot of excitement. Getting to watch iconic characters from all across the Marvel Cinematic Universe share the screen will never get old, and there's always a chance that an unexpected hero will make a surprise appearance to save the day. However, there needs to be a bit of tragedy to counterbalance the fun, making these films perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
Every Avengers crossover has featured a shocking death. Phil Coulson met his final moments during the first Avengers movie... even though he was eventually brought back to star in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Furthermore, Quicksilver was shot and killed in Avengers: Age of Ultron, while Thanos took the lives of Gamora and Vision in Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps the most heartbreaking deaths came in Avengers: Endgame, when both Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff paid with their lives to restore half of the life in the universe. Now, this twisted trend is expected to keep going in Avengers: Doomsday.
Earth's Mightiest Heroes' upcoming adventure will feature no shortage of iconic characters from all across the multiverse, but that also means every one of them could be at risk of dying at any moment. Unfortunately, it seems that will hold especially true for two veterans that fans know all too well.

Loki and Ant-Man will reportedly die in Avengers: Doomsday
The fourth time is the charm? Audiences have seen Loki seemingly fall to his death in the first Thor movie, only for him to return and seemingly die in Thor: The Dark World, just to make a surprise comeback later on and perish in Avengers: Infinity War. Then, we were introduced to a multiversal version of the character that's quite literally holding the MCU together. Unfortunately, it seems his time will come once more.
According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, the God of Mischief will be killed off-screen by Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. The fact that audiences will not see such a moment play out suggests that Marvel intends to lean into the shock factor. Perhaps we'll see Thor finally learn the whereabouts of his brother, only to go there and see Loki lying dead on the ground.
The report suggests that Doom will rip Loki's heart out, bringing a definite end to one of Marvel's most beloved characters. The implications of his death are very interesting because he's the only reason the MCU and all its branched timelines are being held together. Could this event be the catalyst for the incursions to come?
Unfortunately, the tragedy won't end there, as the same source has revealed that Ant-Man's days are numbered. The iconic size-altering hero will lead Cassie Lang and the rest of the Young Avengers into the Quantum Realm, but will perish in the process. This scene could see Scott pass the torch to his daughter, setting her up as a major player in the MCU moving forward.

Interestingly, it has been reported that most Marvel heroes will be mind-controlled by Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars, with a small "resistance group" being the exception. The Young Avengers are rumored to be part of this group, alongside the likes of Tom Holland's Spider-Man, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, and Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.
If Scott Lang does lead the Young Avengers to the Quantum Realm, it would explain why the ruthless villain won't be able to reach them and mind-control them like the rest of the heroes. This would make Ant-Man's sacrifice all the more heartbreaking, yet very rewarding, as it would be thanks to him that the multiverse will eventually have a chance to rise against Doom.
Scott's sacrifice could mirror that of Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War, where the sorcerer willingly gave the Time Stone to Thanos and allowed half of the life in the universe to be snapped away with the hopes that somewhere down the line, a handful of heroes could come back and make things right.
Only time will tell whether these heartbreaking deaths will happen in Avengers: Doomsday or not. For the time being, it seems we should be ready to expect the worst for Loki and Ant-Man.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
