If the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taught us something throughout the years, it is that the big crossover movies always have some characters who steal the spotlight a little more than others. Usually, we see some heroes take a step forward in one movie and then take a step backward in another. That way, everyone has their chance to shine. While Doctor Strange, Gamora, and Spider-Man had a substantial role in Avengers: Infinity War, they were nowhere to be seen for the majority of Avengers: Doomsday. With that in mind, it is likely that we'll face a similar scenario again over the following years.

The MCU is gearing up to release its two most ambitious projects to date, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. What makes these upcoming films so unpredictable is that any character from across the multiverse can make a sudden, unexpected appearance. But while fans have a solid idea of who will join the fight against the Ruler of Latveria later this year—thanks to the Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement—the same could not be said of Avengers: Secret Wars until now. Brace yourselves, because no shortage of fan-favorites are about to save the day.

Spider-Man, Deadpool, Wolverine, and more will reportedly be the leads of Avengers: Secret Wars

According to reliable insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), just "a handful" of MCU heroes and villains will have free will in Avengers: Secret Wars. The rest of the characters will all be under Doctor Doom's control, similar to the WestView incident in WandaVision, where the Scarlet Witch forced many people to live a fantasy. The difference this time around is that we'll see a medieval setting instead of a small suburban town.

On paper, we could see a similar scenario as Avengers: Endgame, where many iconic characters are not available to save the day, and it's up to a small group of people to do the impossible. So, the question then becomes: Who will be free of Doom's control? Well, the same source posted a cryptic video that finally gives us an answer.

In the montage, we see Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Xochitl Gomez' America Chavez, Joe Locke's Wiccan, Ruaridh Mollica's Speed, Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel, Hailee Steinfeld's Bishop, Kathryn Newton's Cassandra Lang, Sadie Sink's mystery character (presumed to be Jean Grey), and Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Overall, it will be up to the Young Avengers and some iconic Marvel veterans to stop Doom.

If the report turns out to be true, then Marvel will finally give us the long-awaited Spider-Man and Deadpool crossover fans have wanted to see on the big screen for years now. But as if that wasn't enough, we'll also see Tobey's rendition of the wall-crawler team up with Hugh Jackman's Logan. While it has been heavily rumored that the two will meet during the events of Avengers: Doomsday, it seems they will be forced to fight each other. So, it's nice to know they will be on the same team further down the line.

Now, a big question to address is: Why will these heroes be free of Doom's control, while the rest aren't? A key thing to note is that this ensemble contains two heroes who possess telekinetic abilities: Wiccan and Jean Grey. Perhaps the two will free the Young Avengers first, along with Tom Holland's Spider-Man.

As for Tobey's rendition of the wall-crawler, Deadpool, and Wolverine, it is rumored that they will "die" during the opening sequence of Avengers: Doomsday. Of course, this tragedy will turn out to be a fakeout, so maybe the reason they were not affected by Victor von Doom in the first place is that they were hiding somewhere else (like The Void at the end of time).

With the X-Men and Fantastic Four being front and center in Avengers: Doomsday, it makes sense for the Young Avengers and some Marvel veterans to step up in the sequel. With a bit of luck, Marvel will also do a cast reveal for Avengers: Secret Wars, and then we'll have a better idea of how the end of the Multiverse Saga will pan out.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is released on December 17, 2027.
