Happy endings are rare for the superheroes who constantly put their lives on the line to protect civilians around them. But somehow, Steve Rogers managed to escape unscathed. The First Avenger hung up the shield in favor of a simpler life set in the past with Peggy Carter, where absolutely no supervillain could get to them. At least, that's what we thought when watching Avengers: Endgame for the first time. But as it turns out, duty calls once more, and if there's one man who will always answer, it's Steve Rogers.
The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday revealed that the original Avenger will come out of retirement for one more adventure. But the price to pay for his comeback may be a little too high. During a Q&A at Fan Expo Boston, Chris Evans revealed that Steve Rogers' storyline in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover will be "brutal."
"The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero: Not someone who never gets punched, but someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up. So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt, and this one was brutal."
Interestingly enough, Hayley Atwell—who plays Peggy Carter—echoed a similar sentiment during an interview with Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con:
"All I can say is that things are not what they seem at times. The world is turned upside down. I described it like an existential crisis of an epic movie. The stakes could not be higher for everyone, particularly for Peggy and for Steve. We're going to be seeing a much more ruffled Peggy than we have before."
Something very tragic is bound to happen to both Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, and a report may shed some light on what it could be.
Doctor Doom will reportedly kill Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter's son in Avengers: Doomsday
James Rogers' fate may have already been sealed even before he has had the chance to make his big-screen debut. The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday revealed that Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter are now parents, but this may not last for long. According to industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, "Doom kills Steve's son in front of him in one of the most shocking moments in the film."
Interestingly, Marvel showcased a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer behind closed doors at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, and the footage featured a very specific line from Doctor Doom that could be referencing this tragic moment:
"All of you have lived stolen lives, and now you must give them back."
This is a very cryptic comment, but if there was one person whose life wasn't supposed to play out the way it did, it was Steve Rogers. The Man Out of Time time-traveled to the past to live his dream life next to Peggy Carter, and this event may have inadvertently caused a branched timeline. Now that the TVA isn't around anymore to prune these alternate realities, they can grow unchecked to the point that they create an incursion—an apocalyptic-level event where two or more universes crash into each other.
This idea falls in line with reports that claim Steve Rogers was indirectly responsible for the death of Doctor Doom's family, all of whom perished during an incursion. As such, the ruler of Latveria may be seeking retribution against the man responsible for ruining his life.
Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter have made plenty of sacrifices to keep the world safe. Unfortunately, it seems the worst is yet to come for the iconic pair, and we're about to see a whole new side of them if their son's life is on the line. On the bright side, it won't be long before we discover what Marvel has in store for us.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
