Daredevil: Born Again was, for the most part, a very fantastic season of television that brought the devil of Hell's Kitchen back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in spectacular fashion. Granted, there are some creative choices not everyone agrees with, such as Muse's early death or how little we saw of Karen Page. Some episodes caused a bit of controversy, with the Bank Heist being the biggest example. Some fans loved it, and others weren't too fond of it. However, there's one thing everyone can agree on, and that is that the new cast of supporting characters wasn't exactly the best.
Superhero fans were used to watching Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson make their way through no shortage of life-ending problems, so it was a bit weird watching Kirsten McDuffie take the latter's place.
Furthermore, Cherry failed to make an impression throughout the entirety of the first season. It also didn't help that Marvel didn't spend much time (if any) developing these new characters. Fortunately, things will be different in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, as fan favorites from the Netflix show will make a comeback to fill the void they left in the first place. That includes a detective that fans will recognize in a heartbeat.
Detective Brett Mahoney appears in the new Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 trailer
Move aside, Cherry, because Detective Brett Mahoney is finally back. Marvel released a new teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 that showcases the dark and violent tone fans have come to expect from the series. Case in point: Bullseye incapacitates agents of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force by throwing knives at their open eyes. Furthermore, Cherry is seen being tortured, and Matt Murdock is involved in no shortage of bloody battles. But beyond the action scenes and unnerving tone, there are two major takeaways from the footage.
First, and foremost, Detective Brett Mahoney is back, and he can be seen at the 11- and 23-second marks. While his return is definitely welcome, an important question to ask is: Why wasn't he present during the events of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again?
It has been heavily theorized that Marvel intends to make a live-action adaptation of the events of The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson comic book storyline. In it, the death of Foggy was faked, and he was taken into the FBI's witness protection program. Everyone's favorite avocado was relocated and given a new name, while FBI agents watched his every move in an attempt to protect him.
If a similar scenario were to happen on the small screen, could there be a chance that Brett Mahoney was one of the agents assigned to protect Foggy in his new city? That would explain why he was nowhere to be seen in the first season and why he didn't make a return until now, when Foggy might finally reveal the whole truth about his case and testify against the Red Hook case.
Speaking about the dead coming back to life, another key takeaway from the latest Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 trailer is the return of James Wesley, the Kingpin's right hand during the events of Netflix's Daredevil Season 1. Granted, chances are that Wesley will appear in a flashback sequence, especially since Karen Page shot and killed him many years ago. However, it's nice to know Marvel intends to double down on the connections to the highly acclaimed Netflix series that started it all.
Many familiar faces are set to appear in what's likely the biggest season of Daredevil ever made to date. Perhaps the biggest return is that of Jessica Jones, with rumors indicating that Luke Cage and Iron Fist will also have a role to play. Coupled with the appearances of Brett Mahoney and James Wesley, it truly seems like we're back to the golden era of television that made Daredevil work in live-action for the very first time after the failed 2003 movie. Better yet, it won't be long before we dive into the twisted and violent streets of Hell's Kitchen for ourselves.
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will be released on March 24, 2026.
