Daredevil director addresses fans’ Foggy theory: ‘You eagle-eyed geniuses’

The first episode of Daredevil: Born Again featured an easter egg that might reveal Foggy's fate, and director Aaron Moorhead has finally commented on it.

The Daredevil: Born Again finale is here, and it's everything we could've imagined... at least for the most part. It has the single most violent scene in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, features an epic team-up between two beloved heroes, and has some shocking comebacks that made us jump from our seats in excitement. But even if the episode checked almost every box from the list, there's one reveal that didn't come our way even amidst popular demand. Yes, we're talking about Foggy's potential comeback.

Back in the opening episode of Daredevil: Born Again, fans discovered an easter egg which suggested our favorite avocado could be alive even after being shot by Benjamin Pointdexter. The address number on the Nelson, Murdock & Page office is 468, which coincides with the number of the comic book issue titled The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson.

During that story, fans were presented with a shocking truth: Foggy was alive, even when he was stabbed in prison, and Matt heard his final heartbeat. It was a huge twist that no one saw coming at the time, but can it be adapted for the small screen? Well, one of the directors of Daredevil: Born Again finally talked about the topic.

Daredevil: Born Again director talks about Foggy's survival theory

Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson are the masterminds and directors behind the first, eighth, and ninth episodes of Daredevil: Born Again (you know, the ones that were the most beloved by fans). The duo was asked if there's any truth behind the theory that Foggy is alive during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, to which Aaron answered:

"You eagle-eyed geniuses. I would love to tell you, however, Marvel will snipe me if I say anything else. But what is really nice about Daredevil being a street-level superhero is that, generally, the supernatural doesn’t really interact with this universe as much, even though it is within the MCU. So that often gives much stronger consequences where punches hurt more and blood means more and getting hurt means more and dying very often does mean that you’re actually dead. But that’s all I can say."

There's a bit of a predicament here. On the one. hand, Aaron Moorhead's comments seem to suggest that Matt's best friend is really dead. Sure, we've seen some supernatural events happen in the Netflix Daredevil show, such as Elektra coming back to life after being stabbed. But more often than not, the fate of those who have bitten the dust has remained unchanged, and Born Again has given us all the reasons to believe that this time will be the same.

On the other hand, if Foggy was truly dead (an idea that seemed to be confirmed in the series' finale), then why would Marvel prevent the creative team from just saying so, unless there was more to the story? Besides, we need to remember that Elden Henson — the actor who brings Foggy Nelson to life — is confirmed to return in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Coupled with the "468" easter egg, there are reasons to believe audiences are in for the comeback of a lifetime.

Daredevil: Born Again showrunner has previously stated that Foggy is "not gone forever". As if that wasn't enough, there's also that one scene featuring Elden Henson that was filmed but didn't make it into the final cut of the show. Could Marvel have intended to reveal his return at some point in the finale? This whole situation is a big rabbit hole that seems to have no end. However, if Matt's best friend is really alive, we need to ask ourselves: Where was he during the events of the first season?

When Foggy Nelson was presumed to be dead in comic book pages, it was eventually revealed that the FBI gave him a different identity and moved him to a different location as part of the witness protection program. Furthermore, he was prohibited from talking with anyone who was once a part of his life (including Matt and Karen) until it was discovered who tried to kill him in the first place. Well, a similar scenario could happen on the small screen in future seasons, especially considering that no one outside of Daredevil's inner circle knows that Vanessa was the one who ordered the hit.

If Foggy was taken out of New York in the Disney+ show as part of the witness protection program, then his reunion with Matt and Karen would be more complicated now that Kingpin has enacted Martial Law. Imagine how heartbreaking it would be for The Man Without Fear to discover that his best friend is alive, but has no real way of seeing him in person until defeating Wilson Fisk. It would add an extra layer of motivation to the character. On the bright side, we don't have a long wait ahead of us before new Daredevil: Born Again episodes come our way and, hopefully, reveal the complete truth behind Foggy's situation.

Daredevil: Born Again will be released in March 2026.
