Marvel confirms Foggy will return for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

During an interview with Brandon Davis, The Head of Streaming, Television and Animation at Marvel Studios, Brad Winderbaum, confirmed audiences will see more of Foggy Nelson in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. It comes as quite a shock, especially considering we saw the beloved Marvel character being shot and killed in the opening moments of the series premiere. Matt even heard his best friend's heart stop beating, so how will such a comeback take place?

"I see Karen as being intrinsically tied to Matt. I don't think there's a Matt Murdock story without those two characters and I'm excited to see them both in season 2 as well (...) Without going into spoiler territory I will say that both Deborah and Elden are coming back for season 2"

At first glance, the most obvious answer seems to be that Foggy comes back in the form of flashbacks. Maybe this could be a The Last of Us Part II scenario where audiences recurrently see how a beloved character shaped the life of the protagonist even after their passing. However, it's also very likely that Foggy survived the events of Daredevil: Born Again, and has simply been secluded for his own well-being.

If we look at the source material, Foggy is supposedly stabbed and killed in the events of Daredevil Vol 2, No. 82 / 462. However, it's later revealed during issue No. 88 /468 that he was simply put in an FBI's witness protection program, and was taken to a secure location and forced to adopt a new identity far away from Matt Murdock. Furthermore, there is even an Easter Egg hidden in the first episode of the series suggesting that Marvel will adapt this fakeout on the small screen. And it's a little bit curious how audiences never saw a funeral take place? Perhaps Foggy is, indeed, alive and well.

During the interview, Brad Winderbaum reveals that Foggy's death "needed to happen" so that Matt is put in a very emotionally complicated spot that would allow for his whole arc in Season 1 to happen, and you can see why. We see him drop the Daredevil persona altogether, and even be more violent when dealing with the corrupt cops of New York City. He isn't holding back anymore, and he won't even enter a church due to the guilt of letting his best friend die. That all wouldn't have occurred without such a tragic event.

That being said, there is still a chance that Matt only believes Foggy is dead, only for the two to finally meet at a later point (perhaps at the end of Season 1, leaving things on a big cliffhanger?). And even if the death scene was 100% real, we'll still see more of Elden Henson's character in the second season as it was recently confirmed. Whether that is through flashbacks or nightmare scenes, who knows? But at the very least there's still more to his story, and we can't wait to see what that is.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again air every Tuesday in Disney Plus.
