To the uninformed, Aquaman is a joke because “All he does is talk to fish.” You’ll hear people say that controlling sharks doesn’t do much when you’re fighting on land. Now, if you know DC Comics, you’re aware that Arthur Curry is incredibly strong, durable, fast, and a skilled fighter. He’s been seen accomplishing feats that a person who “only talks to fish” could never achieve. However, as powerful as he is, he isn’t on the same level as Wonder Woman, Black Adam, or Superman. Well, that was the case until Jeremy Adams’ newest issues of Aquaman.
After almost being killed by an underwater god named Dagon, something spoke to Aquaman. It wanted him to be its avatar. To be, "A dark tide... to crash upon the shores of my enemies... of evil." After Dagon was responsible for killing his wife, Mera, and his friend Jackson Hyde, it was an easy decision to make.
After saying yes, Arthur killed Dagon. It was obvious something had changed in him, but no one knew what it was. Issue No. 9 shows that he’s essentially a god now.
Aquaman No. 9 creative team

Before this series started, DC Comics said that Arthur was going on a journey that would lead him to new heights. No one would have guessed it would put him at a power level that would rival some of the Justice League's best. Nevertheless, writer Jeremy Adams made sure we knew what the Aquagod is capable of with two incredible feats.
First, Aquaman takes a punch from Superman. And not just any Man of Steel. His body was being controlled by something. That means he wasn't holding back. Granted, Arthur’s powers could be magic-based, but that doesn’t make a difference. Aquaman shrugged it off like it was nothing.
Second, he leaves the Justice League Watchtower by jumping out of it. No ship, parachute, or spacesuit. He leaps out without any concern for himself and lands in the ocean. I don’t think Wonder Woman can do that and survive. Yet, there he was, falling to Earth like a comet.
Upgrading Aquaman is long overdue. He’s been powerful for decades, but all of the greats get new and improved abilities. Superman gained some immunity to Green Kryptonite. Nightwing once led the premier superhero team in the world. And Batman once fell from the moon and survived. Now it’s Arthur’s turn to get some new enhancements. However, this is only the beginning.
We don’t know the extent of Arthur Curry’s new abilities or if whatever it was that talked to him and gave him god-like abilities is good or bad. It says it’s there to protect the Blue and crush their enemies, but that could change. Just like Marvel Comics made the Inhumans villains (Imperial), maybe DC Comics could switch it up and do the same for Aquaman. We'll have to wait and see.
