Earlier this year, DC Comics announced the Summer of Superman with the reveal of multiple titles starring The Man of Steel and his family. One of the titles is Superman Unlimited, written by Dan Slott (multiple Spider-Man titles) with art by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire). It was reported that this series would have a “massive extinction-level Kryptonite asteroid” flying at Earth, and only Superman can stop it. Of course, Big Blue saves the day, but stopping the asteroid kept him out of commission for three months. In that time, everything changed.

After Clark is greeted by his family and friends, Batman becomes the resident party pooper and bringer of bad news. While Supes healed, the world got more dangerous thanks to the nation state of El Caldero, which turned into one of the wealthiest countries on Earth. They got this way after becoming the largest supplier of Kryptonite. Unfortunately, El Caldero is selling Green K to anyone.
Superman stopped the asteroid from destroying life on the planet, but he couldn’t prevent people from taking advantage of the newest resource and selling it to villains. Superboy (Conner Kent) and Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) told Supes that everyone from the Cult of Kobra to the League of Assassins has Kryptonite weapons now. Shocking to no one, Superman has an optimistic view.
The Man of Steel says that a little hard work will do them good. Conner interrupts him, saying it’s easy for Clark to say. That’s when Batman changes the light and reveals how Superman survived having an asteroid of Kryptonite fall on him. The Man of Steel is glowing like the sun.

One of the things that a lot of people hate about Superman is that he is too overpowered. While that may be true, that’s part of what makes him a legendary hero. Clark has to fight every day to not lose control or give in to his god-like abilities. Or, as he said to Darkseid in Justice League Unlimited, “I feel like I live in a world made out of cardboard. Always taking constant care not to break something. To break someone.” Adding this new ability is another example of that. Plus, we don’t know what Dan Slott has planned for The Man of Steel’s new golden glow.
For all we know, this new shiny hue could depower Clark or make him weaker while it protects him from the Kryptonite. The only thing we know for certain is that his sun-like gleam will negate the effects of Green K.
Thankfully, Dan Slott is a writer who shouldn’t be doubted. Whatever he’s cooking will be good.
