DC just perfectly explained how Lois Lane became Superwoman
By Mark Lynch
This writer is aware of how that title reads, but you have to give respect when it’s due and Joshua Willamson continues to be one of the best writers in the game.
When Lois Lane revealed her superpowers in DC Comics' Superman No. 19 (also written by Joshua Williamson), it seemed weird. This isn’t the first time that she’s gotten superhuman abilities, but it still seemed off. She wasn’t present at the battle where the heroes' respective powers were given back (Absolute Power No. 4) and everyone with a Kryptonian powerset was accounted for (more on that later). So how did she become more powerful than a locomotive? That was explained flawlessly in Superwoman Special No. 1.
Superwoman Special No. 1 starts with Lois having writer's block and later talking it out with Superwoman (Lana Lang) and Supergirl (Kara Zor-El). This is where she tells the story of how she got her abilities. Fun fact, she doesn’t know exactly. But Mercy Graves confirms the super suit Lois was wearing was connected to Amanda Waller’s Amazos. When the Amazos were taken out and the energy they stole was released, she got an unexpected gift. However, that isn’t the end of the tale.
First, when Lois woke up after getting powers, the super suit was gone. Mercy said she didn’t know what happened to it, but she lied. Mercy has the suit. She tells Lex's daughter, Lena Luthor, that the suit was built for space travel and that she was reaching out to deep space for a signal. When Lena asks Mercy why she lied, Mercy says it’s for the best so Lois doesn’t know why Lex built the armor. We can guess it has something to do with killing or hurting Superman.
After that, two scientists were looking into how Lois gained powers. They pointed out that every Kryptioian with abilities was accounted for. That’s when readers learn one big-time Kryptonian wasn’t considered. His name is General Zod. Yes, Lois has his abilities and he’s not happy.
In one DC Comics special, Joshua Williamson explains how Lois became powerful and laid the groundwork for two upcoming stories. Lex Luthor doesn’t have his memory now (the Superman villain lost his memory at the end of House of Brainiac), but it will return and so will his vendetta against the Man of Steel. When Zod learns that the wife of his enemy took his strength (accidental or not), he’s going to go into a full-on rage. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see how that and the Lex Luthor story ends.
