DC fans concerned after disheartening The Batman - Part II update

In what has undoubtedly been a big week for DC fans, there is a portion of the fandom upset about what is probably the biggest DC movie on the horizon: The Batman 2. Here's why.

It's safe to say that The Batman - Part II is one of the most heavily-anticipated movies on the horizon. What's crazy about that pretty universally-accepted statement is that we've been saying it for the past four years. Matt Reeves' original DC movie opened to major box office success and strong fan / critic reception in 2022 and a sequel was greenlit shortly after that. But a series of unfortunate events - from typical delays to a complete reinvention of the DC Universe caused by a merger - has prevented it from coming to fruition just yet.

The sequel is set to arrive in movie theaters in October 2027, which officially places it on the horizon. That means that all involved in DC Studios should at least begin teasing the upcoming film. And yet, the studio's recent appearance at CinemaCon left fans of The Batman 2 feeling very, very deflated.

DC Studios' CinemaCon presentation excludes The Batman 2

DC Studios attended CinemaCon in Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, this month to give audiences a sneak peek of what's coming from the DC Universe in the weeks and months ahead. There were references to the upcoming Supergirl and the first look footage at Clayface was unveiled too. Something that was not referenced, however, was The Batman - Part II.

Journalists and insiders who were in attendance noted that there were no mentions of the upcoming Matt Reeves sequel, which seems odd considering that it was reportedly due to start filming soon. Star Robert Pattinson recently revealed that the rumors of production starting soon are true as they plan to begin filming in a couple of months. So there is still evidence that the movie is happening, even if DC is seemingly holding back when it comes to speaking about it.

Naturally, the lack of discussion about the film has fans concerned. While Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow wasn't discussed heavily at CinemaCon, there has been a lot of online chatter about the film - especially from DC Studios Co-Chairman and CEO James Gunn, who is set to direct it. But his role as director is why he is understandably more focused on that one as he will obviously will be more involved in the production, so there's nothing to be worried about on that front. It's just the fact that the Superman film kicks off production this spring as well - and also has a planned 2027 release - that has fans a little upset that The Batman 2 hasn't received the same forthcoming approach from DC officials.

But is there really any reason to be concerned? The answer is no. Although there was some worry after the Warner Bros. / Discovery merger that plans for a Batman sequel would be upended, that did not happen. Gunn and Peter Safran's newly-formed DC Studios does have plans to build its own separate DC Universe, but the Matt Reeves Batman saga was too successful to ignore. The fact that its spinoff HBO Max series The Penguin received critical acclaim and dominated the awards circuit is further evidence of how beloved this franchise is.

Furthermore, casting for the movie has proceeded in spite of the delays. Marvel stars and Hollywood heavyweights Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson have joined the cast in the roles of Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two-Face, and Gilda Dent (reportedly), while Charles Dance has signed on to play the former's father Charles. So plans for The Batman 2 remain very much in motion... even if DC could acknowledge its existence every once in a while.

The DC slate this year will be all about Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface. The moment that 2027 rolls around, however, Man of Tomorrow and The Batman - Part II will take the wheel.

Much of the Batman film's plot remains under wraps at this point (which is one of the elements of the film that has benefitted from the lack of discussion about it from both DC and Warner Bros.) but the majority of the cast from the first movie are expected to return. Pattinson's Caped Crusader will obviously be front and center, with Jeffrey Wright's James Gordon, Andy Serkis' Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb / Penguin, and Barry Keoghan's Joker all expected to return. It's unclear at this point if Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman or Paul Dano's Riddler will appear.

The Batman - Part II arrives in movie theaters on October 1, 2027.
