DC Comics’ Absolute Universe has the opportunity to be the best alternate reality in comic book history. That says a lot considering we've gotten the Age of Apocalypse, Superman: Red Son, Injustice, and more. And, while this is a bold claim, it's true.
Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta of Absolute Batman are making Gotham scarier. Writer Jason Aaron has given Superman fans an interesting and extreme take on the Man of Steel. In Absolute Martian Manhunter, Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez are creating a story so dark it's only seen in tragic HBO documentaries. And then there’s Kelly Thompson, who could be writing the best series in that realm, Absolute Wonder Woman. And, according to a post by artist Hayden Sherman, Thompson will be adding to that legacy when Diana of the Wild Isle meets the Bat of Gotham City.
Absolute Wonder Woman and Batman were destined to meet, and I feel like yelling, “IT’S HAPPENING!” like Michael Scott in The Office. There’s no doubt this will be an exciting issue. The two of them will be fighting back-to-back and taking out anyone dumb enough to attack them. But, let’s be honest. We’re all hoping to finally get the Bruce and Diana romantic relationship we’ve wanted for decades.
For the first time, Bruce and Diana are more similar than they aren’t. Neither of them was born into privilege (Bruce with wealth and Diana with Paradise Island). They’re savage fighters who trained without the advantage of various teachers, and both wield an axe. On top of all that, you have Kelly Thompson writing the story. It's hard to believe that she won't at least tease some kind of sexual tension between them. It's not as if it would come out of nowhere.
Bruce and Diana have a history in various media. In both Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoons, Batman and Wonder Woman flirted with each other. During a storyline in Tom King’s Batman (issues No. 39 and 40), the two almost kissed after being stranded and fighting for decades. There was also something going on between them in Zack Snyder's DCEU. Since it wouldn’t make sense for them to date in the main continuity, now is the time to make it happen.
Would it be disappointing if there were no signs of them getting together? Yes, it would. However, whatever Kelly Thompson gives readers will be amazing. She never lets her readers down, and she won’t start now. So, get your order in now, because Absolute Bruce and Diana meet at the end of the year.
Absolute Wonder Woman is scheduled to be released in December of 2025.
