Bat-fans all over the world have been on the edges of their seats in the hopes that they might get any kind of significant update about The Batman - Part II. Now they have got the most significant one of them all: Production has finally commenced on the upcoming DC Studios movie. And that means that all of those irrational fears of the movie being scrapped that we have all had over the past four years can finally be put to bed once and for all.

It was director Matt Reeves who made the announcement, taking to social media to offer up a sneak peek of the Batmobile that Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight will be once again taking to the streets in. However, it might also have alluded to the film's potential villain, with fans now convinced that the upcoming sequel will feature one of the most underrated Batman villains of all.

DC fans convinced Matt Reeves just confirmed The Batman 2's real villain

Matt Reeves recently took to social media to announce that production on The Batman - Part II was officially underway, releasing a new look at the Batmobile while also confirming that at least part of the movie will take place in the winter. Why? Well, because it's snowing - a lot - in the stills, with Reeves himself using the hashtag "SnowTires" in the version of the post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Needless to say, the images very quickly resulted in excitement from fans who were waiting for an update on the film's production, but it also excited them for another reason. See, the snow-covered streets of Gotham City brought to mind one legendary Batman villain, and it has immediately resulted in speculation that the film might feature none other than Mr. Freeze himself.

It's important to note that there have been no official cast announcements suggesting that Freeze will play a part, but the character's name has come up multiple times throughout the four-year wait for the sequel, with a multitude of rumors suggesting that he could be a secret villain in the film. And this certainly doesn't dispel those rumors.

As it stands, very little is known about The Batman - Part II but it is looking like Sebastian Stan's Harvey Dent could be in for a villainous arc, likely the result of a potential transformation into Two-Face. Based off casting alone, the Dents look set to play a major role in the movie, with Scarlett Johansson expected to play Harvey's wife Gilda and Charles Dance officially cast as his father Christopher. Meanwhile, Barry Keoghan and Colin Farrell are also set to reprise their respective roles as The Joker and The Penguin, ensuring that the sequel will have plenty of familiar faces from Batman's rogues gallery of villains.

Could Mr. Freeze also be among them? It's possible. Matt Reeves' first Batman movie tackled a lot, with the primary arc of The Riddler's reign of terror serving as a backdrop against a very lively Gotham City that also involved Catwoman's hunt for her best friend, Falcone's dark history as the city's untouchable crime boss and The Penguin's slow, methodical rise to the top through the Iceberg Lounge. So, even if the sequel does place a focus on the Dent drama, it probably won't be the only arc in the movie, potentially leaving room for Mr. Freeze.

Originally introduced in the DC Comics back in 1959 as Mr. Zero, the villain gained further notoriety after being renamed Mr. Freeze for his live-action debut in the 1966 Batman TV series. However, it was Batman: The Animated Series' original interpretation of the character in 1992 that turned him into a legend, as Freeze was reimagined as a grieving man named Victor Fries, whose reign of terror was simply about revenge on those who wronged his ill wife Nora. The critically-acclaimed reimagining was praised for evolving a rather one-dimensional and cartoonish villain into a Shakespearean, tragic antagonist with a real motivation, resulting in the show winning an Emmy Award.

Reeves previously addressed the possibility of tackling Mr. Freeze in his Batman Saga, saying back in 2022:

"Mr. Freeze, that's such a great story, right?... I think there's actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great… I just feel drawn to finding the grounded version of everything. So, to me it would be a challenge in an interesting way to try and figure out how that could happen."

We'll have to wait and see whether he did figure that out or not. Perhaps the snowy Gotham City is simply about creating a winter aesthetic. Remember, The Batman's Halloween setting influenced the 2022 movie a great deal, making the whole thing a vivid, eerie, and unnerving experience. Perhaps they are attempting to do something completely different with the sequel. And hey, as 1992's Batman Returns highlighted, a Christmastime setting can be eerie too!

Mr. Freeze or not, audiences are extremely excited about the prospect of The Batman 2 starting production. After multiple delays, fears of cancellations, and just years of waiting, it's great to know that Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader is finally on his way back to the silver screen. And he's bringing along those snow tires to help him get there!

The Batman - Part II arrives in movie theaters on October 1, 2027.
