The DC Universe is off to a super(b) start, courtesy of the Man of Steel himself. After all, Superman has been recently making waves for all the right reasons. Whether you loved this new portrayal of Clark Kent, agreed that he had a fantastic chemistry with Lois Lane, found a new favorite hero in Mister Terrific, or just want to have the same effect that Jimmy Olsen has on people, there's a little something for everyone in the latest DC project. The best part? This is just the beginning.
Later this year, Peacemaker will have the spotlight all to himself, courtesy of the second season of his HBO Max series. However, there are also many exciting stories waiting to be told beyond 2025. Audiences eagerly await the release of The Brave and the Bold to meet the DCU's iteration of Batman, Wonder Woman will have her own stand-alone film, and Lanterns will unite Hal Jordan and John Stewart in what's shaping up to be an unforgettable adventure. But before we get a date with any of these projects, there's a highly anticipated movie waiting first.
First look at the DCU's Supergirl movie unveiled
After Superman kick-started the DCU in the best way imaginable, the studio is already looking at what's ahead. The next movie on the slate is Supergirl, and while Kara and Clark share the same powers and come from the same planet, they have radically different personalities. This idea was further cemented by the small glimpse we caught of the superheroine during DC's latest movie. But if that wasn't enough to convince you that trouble is on its way, then the latest Supergirl poster might.

Superman's tagline, "Look up", was all about hope. Two simple words let audiences know that DC's iconic hero would soar higher than ever in his stand-alone movie. Well, Supergirl's tagline maintains the same basic idea, except it takes its message in a whole different direction. Kara isn't confined to the typical ideal of a hero we have in our heads, and there's a reason for it.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Superman director James Gunn revealed that Supergirl's background played a huge role in the way the character will be portrayed moving forward:
"She's a mess. She's a total mess. I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin."
The upcoming DCU movie will be based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This fantastic eight-issue comic book series follows a version of Kara that is a little rougher than the Man of Steel. After all, she witnessed the destruction of her planet, lost countless people close to her, and was sent on a mission to protect her cousin — a hollow purpose given that Clark needed no protection once she arrived on Earth.
On her birthday, Kara was determined to find a planet that had a red sun to drown her problems in alcohol. However, she quickly finds herself on a journey that would teach her what it really means to be a hero. It might sound like a common superhero trope, yet the execution is anything but. After all, there's a reason why this series is considered the best tale the superhero has ever starred in.
Not only does Supergirl have the potential to become a memorable adaptation given its source material, but it can also take things a step further given the reveal that some Kryptonians weren't as "heroic" as we all assumed them to be. As if that wasn't enough, the movie will feature no shortage of big DCU characters. Everybody's favorite super dog, Krypto, is set to appear in the movie, and Jason Momoa's Lobo will make his live-action debut as well. Shooting for Supergirl has already concluded, and the movie is now in post-production ahead of its release next year.
If Superman was any indication, it appears huge things are in store for the DCU, and we can't wait to discover how Kara will fit into this new world of gods and monsters. Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026.
