Back in 2017, gamers worldwide dived into a twisted DC universe where the heroes that were supposed to protect regular citizens became the world's biggest threat. Injustice 2 expanded on the world that NetherRealm Studios meticulously crafted all the way back in 2013. The title featured a larger roster of characters than its predecessor, more intricate fighting arenas, and an even more ambitious story that not only dealt with the ramifications of Superman's actions but also introduced Brainiac into the mix.

Unfortunately, nearly a decade has gone by, and a third entry in the iconic DC franchise still eludes us. Granted, NetherRealm Studios has a proven track record of alternating between Injustice and Mortal Kombat games. The latter franchise had a title released in 2023, with its development officially ending in 2025. That means now could be the perfect time for Injustice 3 to come our way, and it seems that's exactly what will happen.

Injustice 3 is reportedly in the works at NetherRealm Studios

As reported by MP1st, an artist working at Warner Bros. Games listed two games on his résumé: Hogwarts Legacy 2 and Injustice 3. While the former had already been confirmed to be in the works, the latter is a bit of an open secret. Granted, an official announcement hasn't come our way, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest we'll see more of the iconic DC franchise.

During Fan Expo Canada 2025, Superman voice actor George Newbern and Green Lantern voice actor Phil LaMarr both revealed that Injustice 3 is a reality. Furthermore, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn mentioned he had discussions with NetherRealm and Rocksteady about upcoming DC-related games back in 2025. Unfortunately, Gunn also mentioned that we'll have to wait a "couple years” to see these titles come to fruition, but they are definitely coming our way.

If we assume NetherRealm started full production on Injustice 3 last year—after support for Mortal Kombat 1 came to an end—then chances are the game won't see the light of day for at least two more years. With Monolith's Wonder Woman game being canceled, DC has a very weak video game slate. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2026, but after that, there aren't any titles from the superhero giant to look forward to.

Rumor has it that Rocksteady is developing a single-player Batman game while WB Games Montréal is theorized to be working on a live-service DC game. Unfortunately, that's about it. As such, DC absolutely needs Injustice 3.

With Brainiac out of the picture, it could be the time for Darkseid to take over the spotlight. It's important to remember that the "canon" ending of Injustice 2 saw Superman lose his powers and be imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. But if someone as powerful as the Lord of Apokolips were to show up trying to invade Earth, it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that the likes of Batman and Supergirl would eventually ask Clark for help, despite what he's done. That would make for an interesting scenario where heroes would need to choose the "lesser evil".

There's a chance that Injustice 3 is officially revealed next year, ahead of a 2028 release. However, 2029 seems like a much safer bet. On the bright side, that means we'd be able to play NetherRealm's upcoming title in the new generation of consoles, allowing for even more intricate fighting arenas and more breathtaking graphics. But regardless of when the game comes out, it's nice to know it is actually coming our way.
