After the release of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe slowly started to build towards something even bigger and more ambitious in the form of a multiversal crossover. Suddenly, the characters we knew and loved weren't alone anymore as they could team up with iconic heroes from alternate realities without previous warning. But opening such a huge door could have unforeseen repercussions as you never know what (or rather who) could be waiting on the other side. In the worst of cases, you could find a villain disguised as a former friend.
Doctor Doom is coming, and while fans' excitement is through the roof to finally see him, we also have more questions than answers about his upcoming appearance. For starters: Victor wasn't supposed to be the big bad of the Multiverse Saga, so how is Marvel hoping to shine the spotlight on him without completely throwing away the story they already have? And what will prompt him to be an antagonistic figure? How can a character we've never seen before play such a big role in an Avengers movie?
For some time, it appeared we'd have to wait until 2026 to finally get some answers. Fortunately, that is no longer the case as a new report might reveal what Marvel is planning for its biggest movie to date.
Doctor Doom will reportedly be a savior in Avengers: Endgame
A new report by renowned insider Alex Perez, published in The Cosmic Circus, reveals that Victor Von Doom wants to save the multiverse from collapsing due to the incursions. Doom is even compared to Thanos in the sense that they both see themselves as the good guys, even if the means of achieving their goals are extremely questionable at best. But how will the Ruler of Latveria tie into the whole story? Well, oddly enough, it all stems from his predecessor.
During the events of Loki, it was revealed that He Who Remains was keen on pruning every universe that would deviate from the Sacred Timeline and risk creating other Kang variants. If any single character across the entire multiverse made a decision that resulted in a branching reality, their world would be disintegrated. The TVA created a multiverse where no one really had "free will" and, according to the report, this is the reason why the X-Men and the Fantastic Four hadn't made their MCU debut up until this point. Furthermore, this order made Doom angry about his whole universe being "silenced", and now that the multiverse is collapsing he'll want to "take the reins of his timeline and win his freedom".
During the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Marvels, audiences witnessed the creation of doors to parallel realities. Charlize Theron's Clea revealed that these breaches in the multiverse will eventually lead to incursions — apocalyptic-level events where two or more worlds collide and only one (if any) survives. If more incursions keep happening in upcoming movies, then the multiverse as a whole is in danger of eventually collapsing. And wouldn't you know it, but that's when Doom's master plan is set to take full effect.
We've heard for a long time now that Battleworld will be formed during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. This place is made of different parts and "sections" coming from every single reality in existence. Creating such a place could be Doom's way of saving countless lives and becoming the ruler of everything in the process. But the worst part? Some iconic Marvel heroes might be on board with this idea.
Leaked concept art for Avengers: Doomsday reveals that big characters such as Doctor Strange, Yelena Belova, Sue Storm, and Franklin Richards (or at least versions of them) could all be siding with Doom. Granted, the Russo Brothers have since confirmed that these illustrations aren't of their upcoming movies, but it's also worth keeping in mind they were instantly taken down and struck for copyright claims. Marvel definitely wants to keep them under wraps, and it might be because they reveal some characters' alliances with Doctor Doom.
In comic book pages, Doom also sees himself as the only solution to everything. He's capable of killing anyone on his path in the name of the "greater good". So it seems fitting for his character to be a "savior" on the big screen as well, even if it comes at the cost of cherry-picking who lives and who dies when it comes to the creation of Battleworld. Besides, "pragmatic" characters such as Stephen Strange could definitely be on board with this idea, and it would be interesting to see them come at odds with heroes such as Spider-Man who wouldn't approve of these tactics. So if the report turns out to be true, then it would set the stage for a very complex narrative that could rival that of Avengers: Infinity War. But the best part? It won't be long before we finally see this story unfold with our own eyes.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026.
