Doctor Doom is NOT the only Marvel villain in Avengers: Secret Wars

Who said Marvel heroes couldn't turn to the dark side?

The combined might of the Avengers has consistently resulted in Earth's salvation time and time again. Even when this group of remarkable heroes couldn't save half of the universe from being erased by Thanos, they made sure to avenge it. At this point, over seven years have gone by since there was a threat big enough to warrant the group's return, but doom is rapidly approaching for everyone living in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The ruler of Latveria is about to strike, and the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday revealed that he's powerful enough to stop one of Thor's hits with two fingers. However, things start to get a little more complicated when you take into consideration that Victor von Doom won't only face the God of Thunder but also Bob, Shang-Chi, Gambit, and more. As such, fans had theorized that perhaps more people would join the villain's ranks, and it seems this will be the case.

Iconic MCU characters will reportedly side with Doctor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars

Some heroes in the MCU are... a little more pragmatic than others. For example, Doctor Strange was ready to send the multiversal villains of Spider-Man: Brand New Day right to their deaths, while Peter was willing to do anything to save their lives. With that in mind, it doesn't come as a surprise that a few of these legends may turn to the wrong side of history.

According to scooper Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), Doctor Doom will be the main antagonist of Avengers: Secret Wars, but he won't be alone, as "certain characters" will help Doom in his mission to "save the multiverse." While no names were dropped, a previous report by the same source revealed that just a handful of heroes will have free will in the last chapter of the multiverse saga, while the rest will do the villain's bidding.

It seems this potential storyline will begin as soon as Avengers: Doomsday. Leaked set pictures have revealed that Doctor Doom will have a coven of witches and sorcerers by his side, and while all of them are wearing masks, that hasn't stopped the fandom from trying to find out their real identities. So far, the leading theory is that Doctor Strange, Wanda Maximoff, Clea, and perhaps Peggy Carter will join the ruler of Latveria. To make matters worse, they may not be the only ones.

Leaked Avengers: Doomsday concept art showcases the likes of Yelena Belova and Sue Storm on Doom's side. With that in mind, it seems some heroes will willingly jump into the (evil) boat first, before the rest are forced to join, too. Fortunately, the Young Avengers, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Wolverine, Deadpool, and Tom Holland's Spider-Man are rumored to be free of the sorcerer's spell, which will allow them to save the day in the last chapter of the Multiverse Saga.

Strictly speaking about Marvel villains, it has been reported that the Mad Titan, Thanos, will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. Even Josh Brolin himself has teased that his MCU comeback is imminent. With that in mind, there's no reason for other antagonists to return to the big screen. Since Ultron will appear in VisionQuest, maybe his character could be set up for a bigger role in the upcoming crossovers.

All things considered, it seems we could have a bit of a "Civil War" scenario all over again, in which heroes will be forced to face each other. Except this time, more villains will also be in the mix. Granted, it's always important to take rumors with a grain of salt, but given the sheer number of characters set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it was all but a given that Doctor Doom would get some sort of help.

Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on Dec. 17, 2027.
