Does DC Comics need an Absolute Justice League? Not really

The excess of cruelty in DC Comics' Absolute Universe shows that the Justice League shouldn't be part of this timeline. However, that's not to say a superhero team isn't needed.

DC Comics' Absolute universe stars Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Martian Manhunter (or Mindf*cker), and Green Lanterns (Sojourner Mullein, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, and John Stewart). It’s easy to see that DC’s plan was to use their most popular characters to get the momentum going. Another connection is that they’re all members of the Justice League. The only difference is that Wally is leading the charge and Aquaman isn’t around (yet). With these heroes in the front, fans can guess that the formation of their own Justice League is on the way.

Normally, when everything looks grim and a major event is coming, the formation of a super-team is the next thing to happen. There are clues to this happening in comic books like Summer of Superman Special No. 1, where we see Booster Gold is chained and saying that there’s no hope for the future. However, as cool as that would be, the Absolute Universe doesn’t need a Justice League.

The main thing about the Absolute Universe is that it was created in Darkseid’s image. The heroes of the world were born without the care of the people who molded them into heroes, while the villains are enjoying a life of privilege. This leads to the heroes fighting harder and sacrificing more to succeed. Meanwhile, the Justice League is supposed to be a symbol of goodness and optimism. None of that is Darkseid’s universe, and it should stay that way.

It would be cool to see a version of the Justice League, and it will happen. But it’s not something that should occur regularly. First off, it wouldn’t make sense. Bruce Wayne doesn’t have the means to fund it, and he’s too stubborn to let Wonder Woman do it (Absolute Wonder Woman No. 8 shows that she has wealth). So far, Superman isn’t as trusting as the Kal-El we know. Flash is a child, and Martian Manhunter would be useless in a human body.

Whether it's the Justice League or the Justice Society, the root word in the team has no part of the Absolute Universe. The police in Gotham (that aren’t corrupted) are doing the best they can, but it’s not enough. The Peacemakers (Absolute Superman) are violent terrorists backed by a billion-dollar corporation. And that's not the worst of it. While people were dead from being set on fire, one of the detectives in Absolute Martian Manhunter could only think about getting overtime. That’s on top of his disgusting comments about unhoused people.

These are only some examples, and none of them scream justice. So, while it would be nice to see a superhero team fighting back, it can’t be named the Justice League, and it shouldn’t feature the DC Trinity that fans know and love. Hopefully, whatever team is put together makes sense for the stories that are being told. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow’ to find out who that is.
