The end of the world seems to have no end in sight. Audiences worldwide are under the radioactive spell of Fallout, the Prime Video series based on the iconic video game franchise. Season 1 was all about introducing us to characters like Lucy, Maximus, and the Ghoul on the small screen while also letting us into the horrors of war (because, unfortunately, war never changes). Season 2 featured a change of scenery by taking us to New Vegas and showcasing how dangerous monsters like the Deathclaws really are. Now the biggest question is: Where does the show go from here?
Now that the finale of Fallout Season 2 is finally here, it is the perfect time to look at what lies ahead. Does Amazon have plans for a potential Season 3? If so, when will it come our way, and what could it be about? Well, it's time to break down everything we know so far about the future of this beloved TV series.
Fallout season 3 is in the works
During Amazon's Upfront presentation in New York City on May 12, 2025, it was officially confirmed that Fallout Season 3 is a reality. Global Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders, made the long-awaited announcement that the show had been renewed for a third season before Season 2 was even released:
"Together with our amazing partners at Bethesda Games and Bethesda Softworks, we are delighted to announce a third season of Fallout, well ahead of the much-anticipated debut of Season Two."
The fact that Amazon greenlit Fallout Season 3 before waiting to see how Season 2 would perform only shows how confident the company is in the franchise. After all, the first season gathered over 65 million views in only 16 days since its release and has since passed the 100 million-viewer mark. It's worth noting that Season 2's viewership has reportedly dropped compared to its predecessor, but some of that can be attributed to its week-to-week release strategy. After all, some people hold off until all episodes are released to binge-watch the season as a whole.

Quality-wise, Fallout Season 2 delivered big time with a 97% review score on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the 95% score of Season 1. With such an impressive track record, it doesn't come as a surprise that writing for Season 3 has already started. Executive producer and game director at Bethesda Game Studios, Todd Howard, teased that the creative team is looking at what other elements of the game can be implemented in the show's future:
"For us on the game and TV show side, we’re writing Season 3 now. We’re having those conversations now of, what are we doing in Season 3 for the TV show and what elements can we bring into our games at that time when it comes out that don’t feel forced or fake."
So now that we know the series is definitely coming our way, the next big thing to ask is: when could it see the light of day?
When is Fallout Season 3 set to start filming and what is it about?
According to Production List, Fallout Season 3 will start filming on May 1, 2026, in Santa Clarita, California. The report falls in line with comments made by executive producer Jonathan Nolan, who mentioned that the new batch of episodes will be filmed in Summer 2026.
11 months passed since the start of production on Fallout Season 2 and its eventual release. If that same pattern were to be followed, Season 3 would be released in April 2027 at the earliest. Showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson‑Dworet will reportedly be back for Season 3, along with executive producer Jonathan Nolan. Furthermore, Frederick E.O. Toye—who has directed multiple Fallout episodes—is expected to come back as a director for Season 3 as well.
One of the biggest questions about Fallout Season 3 is where it takes place. One of the most popular choices is the Commonwealth, the main setting of the Fallout 4 video game. If that were to be the case, another faction, such as the Minutemen or the Institute, could very well make an appearance. Of course, there's always the chance that the series takes us somewhere new we haven't seen before, such as Chicago.
Perhaps Fallout Season 3's first look could come during The Game Awards 2026, ahead of a possible 2027 release. But given the series' success so far, it doesn't come as a surprise that we'll have at least one more adventure on the Wasteland, and it wouldn't surprise us if more seasons were on their way afterwards!
All episodes of Fallout Season 2 are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
