A little over a year from now, we'll be watching Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble on the big screen to save the Multiverse as a whole. The best part? Excitement levels are already through the roof. The movie's cast reveal alone generated 275 million views online, even when it was just a row of chairs with some names on them. It also helps that the last Avengers movie was released over six years ago, so a new entry in the franchise feels overdue at this point. Fans are eager to get a look behind the curtain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next crossover, and that day is (kind of) here.
Our first glimpse of Avengers: Doomsday came in the form of a set photo, which revealed that Ebon Moss-Bachrach's The Thing will join forces with Danny Ramirez's Falcon, Wyatt Russell's US Agent, and potentially Letitia Wright's Black Panther. Furthermore, a set video revealed that the TVA (the same organization seen in the Loki Disney+ series) will make a comeback. Now, we have a brand new tease of what's to come, courtesy of the movie directors themselves.
Avengers: Doomsday teaser could represent Earth's Mightiest Heroes learning about Doom
The Russo Brothers have shared a picture from the set of Avengers: Doomsday with the hashtag "Doomsday is coming" on their social media account, and fans are trying to decipher what it means. Needless to say, the masterminds behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame love a good, cryptic tease. After all, they pulled a similar stunt before the latter's release seven years ago by sharing a set photo that (sort of) revealed the Endgame's official title. However, nobody is certain about the picture's true meaning this time around.
The overall consensus is that this is a fragment of Reed Richards' chalkboard, as seen in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But the most interesting part is the tagline "Doomsday is coming". Perhaps this image is taken directly from the sequence where Mr. Fantastic warns the MCU heroes that the ruler of Latveria is the next big threat to stop, given that he plans to conquer the multiverse as a whole.
We know that Victor Von Doom is from Earth-828, the home universe of the Fantastic Four. That means the heroes from the "Sacred Timeline" are oblivious to the villain's existence. That idea is even reinforced during the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*, where Yelena Belova claims there's a "huge space crisis" taking place, yet nobody has filled the team in on the details. The only way that the MCU can learn about Doom's existence is through Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm.
During an interview with Comic Book, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that the Avengers will go to Earth-828 and get to meet the residents of the Baxter Building: "We will see this world that we’ve introduced (in First Steps). We’re shooting on all the same sets that we built for Fantastic Four, and it is very fun. I would say the now iconic Baxter Building living room and kitchen where we saw the Four get to know each other in this movie, let’s say there are a lot more people in that kitchen in Avengers, and it’s fun to literally see people coming into each other’s homes, which is pretty awesome."
With that in mind, there's a slight chance that the cryptic Avengers: Doomsday tease is meant to represent the scene where Earth's Mightiest Heroes visit the universe of The Fantastic Four: First Steps for the first time, and are made aware that "Doom is coming", along with his plan to reign supreme over the multiverse. All of that courtesy of Reed Richards and his ever-trusty chalkboard.
Speculation aside, it's nice to know that the teasers will only get bigger from here. Rumor has it that a second cast reveal might hit the internet any time soon. Furthermore, a proper teaser trailer will be released once we get closer to the movie's release. Given that this is the MCU's biggest project to date, the marketing team shouldn't hold back in the slightest. That means fans are in for no shortage of exciting promos not too far away from today, and we wouldn't want it any other way.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
