Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman: The Stranger! DC Comics announced a brand new miniseries featuring the Man of Steel will be launched in Fall 2026, and it goes back to the superhero’s roots. Written and illustrated by Wes Craig, the series will be released under the Black Label imprint. The story revisits the first comic stories of Superman with a modern twist.

The character’s enduring nature has yet to abate, and now there is renewed interest as Superman’s next big screen return is Man of Tomorrow, out in 2027. In the meantime, fans can spend more time with the character on the page with this six-issue mini-series.

What do we know about Superman: The Stranger?

While details are understandably thin, what’s been revealed is that Superman: The Stranger goes back to the origins of the character. We’re talking all the way back to Action Comics #1, where Superman debuted. The series will focus on Superman’s dual life—during the day he’s working-class Clark Kent, and at night, he takes flight to save his city.

This series intentionally turns back the clock on the Superman mythos. From what we can gauge from the announcement, Wes Craig is looking to simplify the Superman story to a man with powers ‘fighting against a corrupt city.’

This really is a throwback to the Golden Age of Superman stories. Earlier comics were very focused on Superman saving fellow citizens while juggling his job and attempting to keep his identity secret. But the core of those stories still remains relevant. The new series will explore systemic corruption, and the uphill battle that one man, no matter how super he may be, has to fight if he hopes to help the average person.

Who’s creating Superman: The Stranger?

Wes Craig is a veteran in comics. He’s the writer and artist of KAYA, the co-creator of Deadly Class, and has worked on numerous Marvel and DC Comics titles, including Batman, Superman, Nightwing, and more.

Craig revealed in the DC Comics announcement that Superman has always been his favorite character, and the characters’ initial outings have always captured his imagination. Craig now has the opportunity to put his own modern stamp on those classic tales in Superman: The Stranger.

But, keep in mind, this series is published under the Black Label imprint, which is specifically for mature audiences. The covers will, in fact, come with DC’s Ages 17+ content descriptor. Given how early comics included casual violence, it shouldn’t be a surprise that a reimagining of those entries will be under a mature banner.

Craig will bring his unique style, with colors by Jason Wordie and letters by Tom Napolitano, to reimagine the original stories of Superman. While inspired by the visuals of the Golden Age of comics and the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons, Craig and team will immerse readers in an ‘art deco-inspired 1938 Metropolis’ where Superman will be fighting for a better tomorrow.

Superman: The Stranger #1 will be released on September 2, 2026.
