Season 5 of Harley Quinn hasn’t had the normal pizzazz that the previous seasons had. However, one thing that has been great is Poison Ivy. In the first two episodes of the season, Ivy’s character has helped her relationship with Harley grow and she has been able to get revenge on her toxic former teacher and lover, Jason Woodrue. The third episode continued to focus on her relationship and Woodrue in a big way.
Jason Woodrue didn’t die after Ivy’s attempt on his life. Instead, he became the Floronic Man and tried to kill Ivy in The Green. With the help of Harley and Frank the Plant, Ivy was saved. Before the couple can fully celebrate their victory and grow as a couple, however, the big antagonist of this season makes his return.
After revealing that Brainiac is preparing to conquer the imperfect planet Earth in the season premiere, he wasn’t seen at all in episode 2. There wasn’t even a mention of him, and that seemed weird since he was the main part of this season’s first trailer. Thankfully, that was rectified towards the end of the episode.
Lois Lane asked Perry White (who was really Clayface) to investigate people having nightmares of a skull and sightings of a UFO in Metropolis airspace (Jimmy Olsen would've gotten a pic, but his lens was on). Of course, Clayface was too preoccupied with the review of his one-man show to care about that. That seemed like this would be the only time Brainiac was mentioned in the episode. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, as the Superman villain returns after teleporting Harley and Ivy to his ship and asking Koko (his alien monkey) what he should do. We can guess it won't be anything good.
Overall, this was another okay episode. Even though Poison Ivy’s story was good, Clayface stole the episode. The problem with that is he was the B-story. His one-man show may be awful, but he’s always a shining, poop-colored star in Harley Quinn. This is concerning since the A-story was good, but the other one was more memorable.
To be clear, this season of Harley Quinn isn’t bad. It’s better than average. However, this writer has become accustomed to being blown away after every episode. By the time this season ends, I could look back at these words and admit I was wrong. You have to see the entire puzzle to get the real picture. In the case of season 5 of Harley Quinn, the puzzle isn’t close to being completed.
