House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2 has a disappointing release date

The next episode of House of the Dragon season 3 will make viewers wait as the show continues HBO's old-fashioned, traditional TV model. That might be a missed opportunity.

HBO's mega hit House of the Dragon has returned to screens for its highly-anticipated third season - and boy, oh boy, what a season premiere it has had. The Game of Thrones spinoff about the Targaryen dynasty has been full of historical moments from George R.R. Martin's books thus far, and we all knew going into season 3 that it would adapt the Battle of the Gullet. Needless to say, it did not disappoint.

With dragonfire and ship wreckage strewn throughout the land, HotD is back with a bang! Naturally, in this modern day and age of streaming, fans will want to know when they can experience the next episode. That is especially true if you are one of the many who binge-watched the first two seasons to catch up for the third. If that sounds like something you did, you're probably going to be disappointed by the show's release schedule.

When House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2 comes out on HBO and HBO Max

House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2 will premiere on Sunday, June 28, at 9:00 p.m. ET, 6:00 p.m. PT, 8:00 p.m. CT, and 7:00 p.m. MT. It will air on HBO in its typical linear broadcast at the top of the hour while also being available to stream on HBO Max at the exact same time (the same goes for locations that offer the HBO Max streamer around the world). Yes, that means the series will be adopting the typical weekly release schedule - unveiling one new episode per week each Sunday night for the next seven weeks.

That might seem typical to longtime HBO viewers who have been there for House of the Dragon's two previous seasons - as well as all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the first season of fellow spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - but for the show's newer audience, traditional weekly releases might seem a little disappointing.

See, in today's day and age of streaming and binge models, audiences are used to getting more quicker. While Netflix obviously drops all episodes of its big shows at once, other streamers have developed a best of both worlds scenario, in which they unveil two or three episodes right out of the gate (essentially offering up a two or three-episode premiere) before then reverting to the weekly release model. This format is a favorite for Prime Video, while Disney Plus has even released two-episode premieres of the odd Marvel show here or there, too.

The addition of the HBO Max streaming service has allowed HBO to experiment with release formats in recent years, so there were some who thought that we might have seen a different format for House of the Dragon. While nobody was expecting a Netflix-esque complete binge model, they wouldn't have been opposed to one or two episodes releasing together at the beginning - especially to make up for the long wait for season 3's premiere. And with the Battle of the Gullet being such a major event, a two-episode premiere would have been an incredible treat. Unfortunately, HBO opted against that.

Nevertheless, we can't complain too much. Few shows captivate audiences as much as the Game of Thrones franchise does, so you can rest assured that the fans will be tuning into the House of the Dragon season 3 episodes - including next week's episode 2 - regardless of the release format. And after that premiere episode, you simply can't blame them for that.

We're ready - and not ready at all - for what comes next!
