It seems like it was only yesterday when House of the Dragon season 3 exploded onto our screens with the Battle of the Gullet. It was clear from that moment that the relatively slow-moving days of season 2 were behind it and the build-up to the Dance of Dragons was upon us. The rest of the season certainly hasn't relented either, as the show continues to prove why it's easily one of the most edge-of-seat experiences on TV today.
That being said, if you have been enjoying seeing Rhaenyra Targaryen's reign as the Queen of Westeros in the third season, you might be upset to learn that the season is set to bow out in just one week, setting the stage for a lengthy wait until season 4.
House of the Dragon season 3 episode 8 is the last episode of the season
House of the Dragon season 3 episode 8 will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, August 9, at 9:00 p.m. ET, 6:00 p.m. PT, 8:00 p.m. CT, and 7:00 p.m. MT . If you have been keeping up the Game of Thrones spinoff all season, this won't come as a surprise to you. What might catch you off-guard, however, is that it will also serve as the season finale. Yes, that means that the show's third season is coming to an end next week.
It's understandable that fans might find this somewhat confusing. The first season of House of the Dragon consisted of 10 episodes, mirroring the vast majority of Game of Thrones' run too. While the second admittedly consisted of eight, there was a lot of publicity about that - particularly because the final two episodes were expected to be the Battle of the Gullet and Rhaenyra's ascension to the Iron Throne. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, the decision to shorten the season was down to managing the super-sized budget and setting the stage for a more epic third season. Unfortunately, that has remained the case for season 3, which is laying the groundwork for the show's fourth and final season.
While the third season has been rolling along at a steady pace, you can already feel the show upping the ante as we head towards the finale. From the escalation of the situation regarding Aemond Targaryen, Alys Rivers, and Alicent Hightower at Harrenhal, to Rhaneyra's unravelling as queen in King's Landing, the stakes are being raised with each and every episode.
At the center of that finale will undoubtedly be the impending showdown with Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) who has very much been positioned as this season's big villain. Refusing to acknowledge Rhaenyra as queen, he has continued to lead his army in the hopes of eventually defeating her and installing Daeron as the new king - despite the fact that the boy doesn't want the title. And, in doing so, he has taken over the town of Tumbleton to carry out his long-term plans.
Rhaenyra is at her wit's end and Ormund is beginning to unravel too. Something tells us that a major battle is brewing in Tumbleton - and we wouldn't be surprised if that is at the center of the upcoming season 3 finale.
Unfortunately, no matter how epic this finale will be - it will start what is shaping up to be another two year wait for the fourth and final season of the series, with HBO roughly targetting a 2028 release date. With that in mind, HotD fans are really hoping that it exceeds any and all expectations so that it can set the stage well enough that we all have something to think about for the next two years as we await the grand finale of House of the Dragon.
